Dylan Minnette of 13 Reasons Why fame opened up about why he quit acting to pursue his passion for music with the band, Wallows. The actor-musician appeared on The Zach Sang Show along with band members on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, where he commented on his acting career and revealed what he has been up to.
Minnette began his acting career when he was just 9 years old, appearing on shows like Drake and Josh, Grey's Anatomy, and Saving Grace. His breakout role came from playing Clay Jensen in Netflix's 2017 teen drama, 13 Reasons Why. However, it is to be noted that the actor has also been a part of the American alt-rock band, Wallows since 2011.
When the host asked Dylan Minnette why he quit acting and if he plans to make a comeback any time soon, he said:

"I was fortunate to find success in (acting). I was on 13 Reasons Why and it was really popular and definitely reached a peak in what I’ve had in acting. But it also started to feel like a bit of a job. I was in a very fortunate position, it was always fun for me, always really inspiring, but then it was just starting to feel like just a job."
Dylan Minnette on pursuing acting and Wallows
At the age of 15, Dylan Minnette (guitar/vocals), along with Braeden Lemasters (guitar/vocals), Cole Preston (drums), and Zoe Mendenhall (bass), formed the band, Join The Band in 2011. They soon changed their name to Feaver, and later took up the name, The Narwhals before settling on Wallows in 2017, without Mendenhall.
Wallows is best known for their singles Pleaser, Pulling Leaves Off Trees, and OK. Their song Are You Bored Yet? (featuring Clairo) became double platinum-certified by the RIAA and served as the lead single for their debut album Nothing Happens.
Talking about focusing on taking Wallows "as far as (they) can" Dylan Minnette told Zach Sang:
"I feel like Wallows and music is this passion that we've always had as a group to take all the way as far as we can. I feel like I'm in a position now where I can do that for a while. The only that's going to happen is if I put my 100% time and energy into it and take it very seriously."
The actor remarked that his passion for music felt "what feels natural and inspiring" at this time. However, he added that there were times he wanted to return to acting, referring to the time he was ready to act but, due to the actor's strike (SAG-AFTRA) last year, he couldn't.
Dylan Minnette has appeared in several hit films, like Let Me In and Prisoners. His final acting credit was playing Tyler Shultz in the 2022 miniseries The Dropout and the slasher film Scream.
The break from acting has been a positive one for the musician-actor, as he shared that he was starting to have more inspiration and had something to give artistically and creatively in other fields.
Dylan Minnette told the hosts that he would take up acting again after he was done with his Wallows duties and ready to take a break as a band.
On April 26, 2024, Wallows dropped their latest single Bad Dream, followed by the release of A Warning on May 10, 2024.
