YNW Melly has a long history of legal problems which dates back to 2015. He was charged with double murder in 2019, connected to an incident from the previous year in Florida. Initially arrested for marijuana possession, his trial began last year but did not proceed to a verdict for unspecified reasons. The latest update indicates the trial has been postponed to September 10, 2025.

The new date was given by Judge Martin S. Fein and YNW Melly's mother Jamie King also confirmed the same through an Instagram video. King revealed the new date for the trial in the clip and stated:

"Just trying to give everyone a quick update on what happened today in court. Free Melly til he's free. He's coming home, guys – just patience. So, we did have court today; him and Bort, they both had court."

Also known as Jamell Maurice Demons, the artist recently appeared for a hearing at the Broward County court alongside YNW Bortlen to reschedule the double murder trial.

Melly's arrest in 2019 also came with certain restrictions, including that he was not allowed to contact his attorney or receive calls and letters.

YNW Melly's bail was rejected last year until a new trial date was finalized: Murder charges and other details explained

As mentioned, YNW Melly's first trial ended up being a mistrial in 2023 and although a new date was set for October, his bail was dismissed. The defense team claimed during last year's trial that Melly was not associated with the murders that happened in 2018.

Brown Circuit Judge John Murphy told the jury to consider coming to a verdict during the break, saying that he would declare it a mistrial if there was no decision. The case was supposed to go for another trial with a new jury and Melly's attorney Stuart Adelstein shared his response to the result. He said:

"We are somewhat disappointed that Melly is not walking out the door with us. There is a lack of evidence, there is a conflict in the evidence, and the evidence itself and the investigation itself, stinks."

The double murder charges were imposed on YNW Melly in 2019, which was linked to the deaths of two individuals, Anthony Williams and Christopher Williams. The victims were 21 and 19 years old respectively and Melly was taken to Broward County to face the charges.

He even shared an Instagram post and wrote:

"I am turning myself in today I want you guys to know I love you and appreciate every single one of y'all, a couple months ago I lost my two brothers by violence and now the system want to find justice."

The victims were childhood friends of YNW Melly. Although he remains in prison, his latest album, Young New Wave, was released on April 19 this year. The album received negative reviews and Melly was featured in a few singles from the entire soundtrack.
