Tyka Nelson could not perform at her farewell concert in June after she fell sick
The news of Tyka Nelson's demise came a few months after the singer could not be present at her farewell show in Dakota in June. Before the show, she spoke to The Minnesota Star Tribune and said:
"I’m getting older. I really wasn’t a singer. I’m a writer. I just happen to be able to sing. I enjoy singing."
At the time she was also working on a memoir, which was yet to be finished as of June 2024. When asked about the memoir, she told the outlet:
"We are not there yet. We’ve got a few more chapters. It’s about me and my family."
The late singer had released four albums in her career, with her debut, Royal Blue being released in 1988. Her song, Marc Anthony's Tune from this album, reached No. 33 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at the time. This was followed by the album, Yellow Moon, Red Sky, released in 1992, and A Brand New Me, released in 2008. Her final album Hustler was released in 2011.
Born in May 1960, Tyka Nelson reportedly had problems with prostitution and addiction. She, however, bounced back from both these issues over time. In an exclusive interview in September 2003 with The National Enquirer, Tyka spoke about being a single mom when she prostituted herself.
Tyka further stated that her sons were then babies and she needed money to feed them and raise them. According to PEOPLE, it was her brother Prince who got her into rehab in the early 2000s. In 2008, she got back to her music career after becoming sober.
Since the singer's demise, netizens, particularly her fans have flooded the internet with their tributes and condolences to the grieving family.
