Social media has erupted with reactions after pop star Demi Lovato accused Meta of "shady" behavior, claiming the platform made her unfollow U.S. Vice President JD Vance on Instagram not once, but twice.
On January 22, 2025, American singer, Demetria Devonne "Demi" Lovato, took to her Instagram account and shared a story with a screenshot of her following JD Vance, claiming that she had previously unfollowed him twice.
As a result, many users on X reflected on her claims, sparking a flurry of online discussion. Several users questioned the integrity of social media algorithms.
"How many more conspiracies can there be? I can’t keep up!" one commented.
Moreover, a few users on X indicated that they empathized with her experience, sharing similar frustrations about being forced to follow certain personalities. Others noted that Lovato’s situation was not unique, as this issue seemed to be affecting many individuals.
"I get her pain I’ve had to unfollow Jimmy Fallon multiple times. Like they don’t get it I don’t like him. Stop pushing Fallon on to me!" a user on X commented.
"This is happening to so many people they need to stop trying to force people to follow and see him every 5 seconds," another wrote on X.
"They did the same thing with Rihanna when she literally despises Donald Trump and Jd Vance," a netizen on X.
However, some users on X suggested that this might simply be a glitch. They speculated that Lovato might have accidentally followed JD Vance multiple times, which resulted in the current situation. These users argued that Meta does not engage in such practices.
"Demi Lovato probably followed Vice President JD Vande multiple times and then unfollowed. Meta doesn't automatically add followers," a user on X commented.
"They’re literally in the middle of changing their platform. Ever heard of a glitch?" one more wrote.
"Maybe you just thought you unfollowed and didn’t actually…lol that’s probably more likely," another said.
As of now, Demi Lovato has not yet responded to the reactions online, nor has JD Vance addressed Lovato’s claims.
Demi Lovato questions Meta's actions on Instagram:
On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Demi Lovato used her Instagram account to share a screenshot showing she was following U.S. Senator JD Vance.
In her Instagram story, Lovato alleged that she had to unfollow the senator twice, implying she never intentionally followed him. She accused Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, of engaging in questionable practices. Lovato captioned the post:
"I have unfollowed this guy twice today. Shady f*cking business meta."
Demi Lovato is not the only individual making such claims. On Monday, January 20, 2025, following the presidential inauguration, numerous Reddit users reported a similar issue, stating they had started following Donald Trump and his wife on Facebook.
"All of a sudden I was following Donald and his wife on fb. Everyone check your page because a few people are saying the same thing and I sure as h*ll have never looked at their pages. Hoping I took care of that problem," wrote on Facebook.
Addressing the situation during an interview with BBC, social media expert Matt Navarra commented on the potential risks of Meta if the issue is not addressed promptly.
"In a hyper-partisan environment, even unintentional errors like this can escalate into accusations of partisanship. If these issues are not resolved quickly they risk fuelling conspiracy theories and damaging Meta’s reputation," Navarra wrote.
At present, Meta has neither confirmed nor denied the authenticity of these claims. It remains unclear whether users were made to follow certain accounts intentionally or if the issue was accidental.
