British rapper Loyle Carner revealed the birth of his daughter during his headline performance at the All Points East Festival. The announcement came on a Saturday, amid a set that saw a crowd of 35,000. The event was held at Victoria Park, in Carner's hometown, London. The artist also has a son, who was born in late 2020, making him a father of two.
Loyle Carner, born Benjamin Coyle-Larner, is renowned for his socially conscious lyrics. He used the festival performance to disclose the major personal news to his fans. While performing his hit song Ottolenghi, he modified the lyrics to fit his new status as the father of a girl. "Because now I have a son and a daughter," he rapped, bringing an end to his set. The original lyrics were meant to say:
"So I sit and start to wonder on the woman she’ll become / Wonder if I’ll have a son or a daughter."
The crowd reacted enthusiastically, celebrating the rapper's news with a wave of applause.
Loyle Carner joined on stage by powerful guest appearances
Guyana-native poet John Agard and activist Athian Akec joined Carner on stage during his set at the All Points East festival. The trio addressed racial identity and knife crime. Agard's rendition of his poem Half-Caste served as the inspiration for Carner's track Georgetown. Akec, on the other hand, delivered a speech about knife crime. He originally presented the same at the House of Commons in 2018.
Loyle Carner's set also saw him collaborate with musicians Tom Misch and Jordan Rakei. The rapper performed several fan favorites such as Plastic, Blood On My Nikes, and Ottolenghi. He closed the night with a display of fireworks.
All Points East Festival hosted a diverse lineup of artists this year. US rappers Nas and André 3000 were part of the festival, along with south London-born singer Lianne La Havas. Canadian producer Kaytranada performed on Friday, with Mitski following suit on Sunday. Other headliners included LCD Soundsystem, The Postal Service, and Death Cab For Cutie.
Loyle Carner on fatherhood
In June 2023, while in a conversation with Hunger Magazine, Carner shared how being a father has changed his life for the good. Talking about his approach to parenthood, the rapper said:
"I’m parenting my son with an understanding of motherhood – I haven’t seen parenthood with much fathering attached to it."
The 29-year-old added that he wants to be different from his biological father and his stepdad, who never showed him much affection. The Brit Awards nominated artist mused that being there for his son gives him joy and peace.
"Everything I do for him (his son), I’m doing for myself, which sounds very deep and heavy, but it’s so straightforward. I feel very comfortable with who I am, how I look and where I sit," he shared.
Loyle Carner's latest album, Hugo, came out in 2022. The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Album of the Year category at the 2023 Mercury Prize.
