One of Young Dolph's alleged shooters, Justin Johnson, aka Straight Drop, faced trial for the Memphis rapper's murder on Monday, September 23. The prosecution claimed that Johnson, along with others, was involved in the November 2021 daytime shooting that led to Young Dolph's death in his hometown.
Prosecutor Paul Hagerman played security footage that was recorded outside of the storefront where the rapper was killed after allegedly getting more than 20 gunshot wounds.
The footage showed the 36-year-old rapper entering a cookie store before a white Mercedes pulled up and a gunman with a semi-automatic weapon shot through the storefront window. Another shooter with a handgun came out from the Mercedes shortly after and started opening fire.
The two continued raining bullets on the Memphis rapper as he lay unmoving on the floor. As per Young Dolph's autopsy report, he was shot in his chest, chin, neck, both of his arms and several times in the back.
Fox 13 reported that Dr. Juliette Scantlebury, an expert in forensic pathology, testified that the To Be Honest hitmaker suffered 20 entry wounds and four exit wounds from gunshots.
One of Young Dolph's shooters testifies against Justin Johnson in the murder trial
Justin Johnson is accused of being one of the shooters who killed the rapper in 2021. One of the others accused in the case, Cornelius Smith, testified against Johnson.
He said that Hernandez Govan told him and Johnson about the $100,000 bounty. Both of them agreed to kill the rapper for $40,000 each. Govan was set to receive $20,000.
Smith identified himself and Johnson as the two people caught in the security footage, that showed him raining fire on the storefront and killing Young Dolph. The prosecution said that the first shooter who got out of the Mercedes was Cornelius Smith and the second one with the handgun was Justin Johnson.
On the stand, Smith said that Johnson picked him up from his father's Orange Mound residence. They saw Dolph's car and followed him into Makeda's Homemade Butter Cookies store. Detailing the shooting incident, Smith said that he and Johnson "jumped out and started shooting."
He also testified that he and Johnson ditched the car in a driveway shortly after the murder and switched cars. Cornelius Smith also said that he and Johnson spoke to Govan after ambushing Young Dolph. Govan allegedly told them to "get rid of that car."
Smith said that he went back to wipe the white Mercedes down "a couple of days after the shooting." Smith also testified that he only received $800 from the $40,000 promised for the killing.
