Mariah Carey confirmed that her 63-year-old sister, Alison Carey, passed away on the same day their mother Patricia died. The Grammy-winning singer shared the "tragic" news in a statement to People magazine, published on Monday, August 26, saying:
"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
Shortly after reports came out that the Touch My Body singer's mom had passed away, news of the death of Carey's estranged sister also circulated. Alison Carey's friend and advocate, David Baker, told Times Union that she passed away at her Greene County residence. He didn't share the cause of her death, but mentioned that it was related to organ function.
Baker noted that they "knew it was coming" and that "there were signs" that Alison couldn't go any further. He added that the Huntington, Long Island native was in hospice care and had been estranged from her musician sister.
Mariah Carey discussed her strained relationship with her late sister and mother in her memoir
Mariah and Alison Carey had been estranged for many years before Alison's passing, and the strain in their relationship appeared to have gone even longer. In the singer's 2020 autobiography titled The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she alleged that her older sister, Alison, had given her drugs when she was only 12 years old.
She also claimed that her sister gave her third-degree burns and recruited her for s*x work. The star wrote in her memoir that it was "emotionally and physically safer" for her to cease any contact with her older sister.
In response, Alison sued the singer in the state Supreme Court in Manhattan the same year the book came out. She claimed that the musician defamed her and the former asked for $1.25 million in damages.
While Mariah Carey's relationship with their mother, Patricia, wasn't any better, the star reportedly kept in contact with her mom as opposed to cutting ties, like she did with Alison. Talking about her and her mother's bond in her memoir, she said that it was "a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment."
Patricia, whom the singer got her musical chops from, also joined the star onstage on several occasions. They came together for Carey's ABC Christmas concert in 2010 for a performance of the O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah chorus.
The Grammy-winning singer dedicated her autobiography in part to her mother despite their ups and downs. She noted in the dedication that she believed that Patricia "actually did the best she could" and that she would love her mom the best she could.
At the news of her mother's death, Mariah Carey mentioned in her statement to People magazine that she was able to spend the last week with Patricia before her passing. She requested privacy "during this impossible time."
