Raina Chassagne has filed for divorce from incarcerated rapper Tory Lanez after less than one year of marriage. According to court documents obtained by Page Six on June 10, 2024, Chassagne has mentioned "irreconcilable differences" as a reason for the filing. She has listed their date of separation as June 1, 2024.
Tory, real name Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the feet back in 2020. The case involved a drunken roadside quarrel between Tory, Megan, and her then-best friend, Kelsey Harris.
Per the documents, the couple got married on June 25, 2023, just a couple of months before he was officially sentenced. Chassanne also seeks sole physical and legal custody of their 7-year-old son, Kai’lon Peterson, but has agreed to visitation. It remains unclear how long the couple dated before they were married.
Kai’lon Peterson got to visit Tory Lanez two weekends in a row earlier this year at California Correctional Institution, Tehachapi
Despite her wishes for sole custody, Raina Chassagne took Kai’lon to visit his father at the California Correctional Institution, Tehachapi, earlier this year. Citing Ceasar McDowell from Tory Lanez's legal team, TMZ reported that Kai got to visit him two weekends in a row.
The publication stated that the father-son duo reportedly did not have to talk through a glass and sat at a table with each other. They played board games, did some drawing, and shared food from the vending machine. They even got to hug each other. The 7-year-old was present during the rapper's trial and Tory Lanez stated that his son is his support system.
According to Daily Mail's report from 2023, Raina Chassagne attended Lanez's sentence hearing. She asked the judge for a reduced sentence in an "emotional plea," calling him ambitious, trusting, and a dedicated father. She asked the judge to break the cycle of black fathers being in prison, separated from their children.
During the hearing, Lanez too asked for leniency, explaining that Megan Thee Stallion was his "friend" and that he cared for her "dearly." Megan was not present during the hearing, but a written statement was presented on her behalf, saying:
"He not only shot me. He made a mockery of my trauma. He tried to position himself as a victim and set out to destroy my character and my soul. He lied to anyone that would listen and paid bloggers to disseminate false information about the case on social media."
Tory Lanez was convicted on three felony charges - assault with a semi-automatic handgun, having a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging his firearm in gross negligence.
People magazine reported that Chassagne has not requested spousal support in her filing. However, she reserves the right for future determination at the discretion of the court. Meanwhile, Tory Lanez's legal team has not released any statements about the development.
