A new controversy arose with Kendrick Lamar being chosen as the performer Super Bowl LIX, over Lil Wayne. A number of netizens had asked this question, while many agreed to the idea. Recently, however, several artists too have posed this same question to Jay-Z, who is a co-producer of the event.

While discussing further on this topic, it is important to understand how the Super Bowl halftime show performers are selected. The NFL is a huge factor in the US, hence, they usually choose performers who cater to a massive audience. Sportscasting reported that it's not either NFL or the producers who choose the perform. This task is instead given to the host cities.

It could, thus, be concluded that choosing Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne was a decision taken by the host city New Orleans and not Jay-Z. The league's duty is to only come up with a shortlist of eligible performers.

For the unversed, most of the performers never got a second chance to perform at the event. Only a few artists including Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Bruno Mars had performed more than ones at the halftime show. Unlike popular belief, the performers also never got paid, as confirmed by The New York Times. Michael Jackson was the only one who received a donation of $100,00 for the Heal the World Foundation.

Everything to know about the controversy of choosing Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne to be the performer at the Super Bowl halftime show

As mentioned, despite several allegations and bashing, it wasn't on Jay-Z to choose who was going to be the performer at the Super Bowl halftime show. Several artists have, however, called Jay-Z out for not choosing the New Orleans native.

On Monday, Cam'ron spoke on his podcast about the matter and claimed that Jay-Z's beef with Lil Wayne was possibly the reason that Kendrick Lamar got selected. He said:

"Lil Wayne had a problem with somebody before who’s kind of part of the organization running [the Super Bowl]—this is payback. Who’s Lil Wayne’s artist? Drake."

Nicki Minaj too, took to X, to express her views on the matter. According to her, Jay-Z's beef with Birdman could be the reason behind the decision. The feud gained momentum in 2009 when Birdman claimed that Wayne was a better rapper than Jay-Z. In her tweet, she further claimed that his hatred for Nicki, Drake, and Birdman made him choose Lamar.

A lot of people believed that since the halftime show was set to happen in New Orleans, the performer should have been a native. It was further pointed out that Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar were chosen as performers for Super Bowl LVI when it was held in California. Many, however, didn't agree to the idea.

However, it is now reported that Jay-Z didn't get to select the performer for the Super Bowl halftime show. For the unversed, the 54-year-old rapper was named the co-producer of the event back in 2019. This happened shortly after a partnership was established between Jay-Z and the league where the former was expected to suggest the league on music and entertainment.
