Sixteen-time Grammy winner Adele revealed that she has no intention of working on any new projects and plans to take a hiatus from producing new music after her shows in Germany. In a July 14 interview with the German outlet ZDF, the 36-year-old talked about taking a 'big break' from work and doing other creative things.
“I don’t have any plans for new music, at all. I want a big break after this and I think I want to do other creative things, just for a little while,” explained the singer.
Adele's residency shows in Germany will seemingly mark her last musical endeavor before she starts her long hiatus. The shows will be held in the newly built Munich Messe arena in August. The open-air arena boasts a gigantic capacity of over eighty thousand and has been purposely built for these shows.
In the same interview, the singer revealed that the reason for her break was that she wanted to get herself out of people's eyes because of her incessant struggle with handling fame over the years.
“I miss everything about before I was famous, I think probably being anonymous the most. I don’t like being famous. I love that I get to make music all the time whenever I want and people are receptive to it and like it, because that’s pretty unimaginable… that never happens to people," expressed the singer.
She further explained that people liking her songs is something that never 'gets normal.' The singer ended the discourse by stressing the importance of striking the right balance in life and using the hiatus as a tool to get there.
“But, the fame side of it, I absolutely hate and I miss everything about before all of this had happened. The fact that people are even interested in my voice and my songs is pretty wild, I don’t think it ever gets normal, you know? So it’s worth it… [it’s just finding] the balance.”
History suggests that Adele has always taken her own sweet time in between albums
Adele has always spaced out her album releases as much as possible. Her debut album, 19, came out in 2008, and she took a three-year break before releasing her next album, 21, in 2011. Her next album was called 25 and was released after a four-year break. The singer's most recent album, 30, came out in 2021 after a massive hiatus of six years.
In fact, she gave an inkling of another long break in her Weekends With Adele Las Vegas Residency show on January 27. Midway through the concert, she addressed her fans and revealed that the singer wouldn't "write an album for quite some time."
“I just don’t think I’m gonna write an album for quite some time. But next time I do, I’ll come to wherever it is you live,” said the 36-year-old.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in December 2023, Adele explained why she spaces out her album releases so much. The Hello singer explained that her 11-year-old son is one of the major reasons why she allows herself time off. Furthermore, she commented on rejecting the 'scarcity of success.' The singer challenged herself to not put an effort into being relevant all the time and yet be successful.
“It was there and then that I chose to reject the scarcity of success, and the idea that you have to be constantly relevant to be successful. And that perhaps, just maybe, I could be a hit both on and off the stage. And you’ll never guess what — I f**king got away with it!”
Adele explained how the Vegas Residency helped her fall in love with music all over again
In an X post on October 20, 2023, Adele wrote an essay about how she desperately needed to connect with her music and feel her songs all over again. The singer explained that the concerts have helped her fall in love with her music all over again.
"This residency, these shows have changed my life. I desperately needed to fall back in love with performing live again, and I have. I needed to reconnect with my songs and remember what they mean to me, and I have!"
Thereafter, she mentioned all the "hilarious, soulful, wild and heartbreaking interactions" she had with the audience and how the love she received in the Vegas Residency turned out to be a cathartic experience for the Grammy winner.
"Being on stage over the last year so up close and personal with an audience again after all these years has been a truly extraordinary restorative experience that I’ll never forget. All the hilarious, soulful, wild and heartbreaking interactions we’ve had are banked in my mind for life," explained the singer.
The singer concluded by expressing her gratitude to fans for making her realize that she enjoyed doing her craft and was "bloody good at it."
