Lay Bankz appeared for a conversation with Billboard through Zoom on Thursday where she started by speaking of the response that her song Tell Ur Girlfriend has received until now. She said that this kind of success has been her biggest dream and she waited for this moment over the years. She continued:
"This is nothing new. I played the violin, I played piano, I was in orchestra, I was in vocal [lessons], I did musical theater, I took poem classes and I learned how to write poems and write raps. I couldn't see myself doing anything else."
She revealed that her new single emerged out of a real-life experience and she approached producer Johnny Goldstein alongside writer Ink to release a project based on the same. She said that she sat with Johnny and Ink for around two hours and as they began preparing the single, she openly expressed her feelings.
Lay Bankz even recalled her previous song Ick, saying that no one liked it at first. She further stated:
"I kind of shied away from it because I was like, Wow, nobody likes it – oh sh*t, am I doing something wrong? In reality, I'm just being myself. I didn't let it get to me, so I'm like, All right, I'm still going to promote, I'm just not going to feed into it. But when I start looking at the bigger picture, I [decided to] start replying to hate comments with videos of myself."
Bankz said that music is her "first love" and she never finds interest in doing anything else. She added that she has around 10,000 songs planned in the next five years and that apart from being unique, the songs also share a different kind of connection with her.
