Music producer Ebro Darden addressed Drake’s career trajectory following Kendrick Lamar’s recent The Pop Out: Ken and Friends concert. In an Apple Music show, Darden opined Drake will have a difficult time recovering from Kendrick's recent diss tracks.
Kendrick Lamar took to Los Angeles’ The Forum stage on Wednesday, June 19, to perform a highly anticipated 18-track set. The Juneteenth concert included appearances from several music industry legends, including DJ Mustard, Tyler, The Creator, Ty Dolla $ign, and more. The Compton native opened the show with his popular Drake diss track Euphoria and also performed his latest track Not Like Us five times, among many other songs.
Speaking about what fans can expect from Drake, Ebro Darden stated,
“I don’t know how Drake comes back. I don’t know what his sound is gonna be. Everybody’s like, ‘What got taken from him?’ How does Drake ever talk greasy on a song like you about to do something tough after? Kendrick called you out for coopting the entire Atlanta thing, so what is your slang now? What are you saying now?”
“Toronto got a sound” — Ebro Darden opined on Drake’s upcoming music following Lamar's recent Pop Out concert
Ebro Darden is a radio personality best known for appearing on WQHT’s Hot 97. He is the co-host of the Ebro in the Morning Show alongside Laura Stylez and Peter Rosenberg. He has also been appearing on many Apple Music shows.
Speaking about Drizzy and his Toronto hometown, Darden said,
“But also, there’s an opportunity in that because now it is time. A lot of people in Toronto was like, ‘Toronto got a sound.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, in this battle, if Drake would’ve said, ‘You know what, like the Avengers, it’s Toronto versus everybody’ What would that have sounded like? We know when we heard Mustard on the beat, we knew what that was. What is that for them? When it’s time to wage war."
Ebro Darden’s comments come after Kendrick Lamar performed Not Like Us five times, as mentioned previously. In the chart-topping track, the West Coast rapper claims that Drake “colonized” Southern rap culture for his benefit. He also accuses Drake of being a p*dophile in the track.
During his concert, Kendrick also stated,
“Y’all ain’t gonna let nobody disrespect the West Coast, huh?”
The musician then criticized Drake for using AI-versions of Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur’s vocals in his track, Taylor Made Freestyle. Kendrick then said,
“Oh y’all ain’t gonna let nobody mock or imitate our legends, huh?”
Following his concert, Lamar recorded a music video for Not Like Us in Compton, California. The video reportedly includes several popular spots in Compton. Meanwhile. Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. commented that could be nominated for a Grammy.
