Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, who goes by the stage name Chappell Roan, recently revealed she once got into a bar fight with a man after defending a server. In her interview with The Guardian on Friday, September 20, 2024, the singer recalled the time she confronted a man who was talking down to a waitstaff.
"If you’re an ***hole, I’m gonna be like: ‘Yo, f**k off.’ You don’t get to talk to her like that," she said, adding, "I'm confrontational."
The Good Luck, Babe hitmaker and her friends quickly intervened, and the ensuing argument soon escalated into a brawl.
Chappell Roan rose to fame with 2020 single Pink Pony Club. Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess (2023), earned her a stint on Olivia, Rodrigo's Guts World Tour, and mainstream success. Through the years, Roan has been outspoken about her beliefs, including her support for the LGBTQ+ community, mental health, and even about Palestine.
"Everything that I really love to do now comes with baggage"— Chappell Roan about fame
Elsewhere in the interview, Chappell Roan explained that she was recently diagnosed with severe depression. She elaborated that due to her overnight success, she finds it "hard to keep up."
"I think it’s because my whole life has changed. Everything that I really love to do now comes with baggage. If I want to go thrifting, I have to book security and prepare myself that this is not going to be normal. Going to the park, pilates, yoga – how do I do this in a safe way where I’m not going to be stalked or harassed?," she told The Guardian.
Roan added that her need for boundaries has resulted in many fans calling her "ungrateful."
During the MTV VMAs earlier this month, the singer confronted a photographer who was screaming at her, asking them to "shut the f*ck up." Later in the evening, she told Entertainment Tonight, she has anxiety, and it was "overwhelming and quite scary" when she was shouted at.
Recalling the incident, Chappell Roan told The Guardian, some women have been in the limelight for a long time and are used to it, but she refuses to be "oh sweetie pie to a man who is telling her to shut the f*ck up."
"They think I’m complaining about my success. I’m complaining about being abused," she said.
In June, Roan turned down an invitation to perform at the White House during a pride event. During the 2024 Governor's Ball Music Festival at Flushing Meadows, the singer responded to the invitation, stating:
"This is a response to the White House, who asked me to perform for Pride. We want liberty, justice, and freedom for all. When you do that, that’s when I’ll come."
The singer's refusal stemmed from Joe Biden's decision and handling of the Israel and Palestine war.
The singer is known for her drag-like aesthetics and performance during her shows. Her debut album came out during a time when the anti-trans rhetoric was on the rise and drag performances were criminalized.
Chappell Roan is currently on her The Midwest Princess Tour, with her next performance scheduled in New York.
