Lil Wayne has released many collaborative projects over the years and one of them is Mona Lisa, featuring Kendrick Lamar. The single is part of Wayne's twelfth album, Tha Carter V, which came out in 2018.
Meanwhile, a video was posted on the Instagram page of Lil Wayne HQ on June 6, 2024, that grabbed public attention. In the video, the rapper spoke up on why he never performs the single live. The video was recorded at a concert where he started by saying:
"This is the second time I seen this within my last three shows. Somebody had a sign that said to do 'Mona Lisa.' I'm not sure if that means you, if y'all said y'all real Lil Wayne. So if you real Lil Wayne fans, do you know I don't know the lyrics to my sh*t."
He added that the song is 'hard" and that he is "going to learn it'. He then started performing another track and said at one point:
"I don't like to rap the words, but I'm going to learn that sh*t. I'm going to learn it. I'm going to learn. I got you."
More about Lil Wayne's track Mona Lisa
DJ Infamous, who served as a producer for the track titled Mona Lisa, appeared in an interview with DJBooth in 2018. He recalled the time when the song was in the making process and shared that he was impressed with the first verse presented by Wayne. Infamous further said:
"Then he did a second verse and at the time, his engineer was a dude named Omar Loya. Wayne was talking about trying to get a feature on the song. Everybody was kinda like 'Maybe Nas would be crazy because it's a storytelling song.' Omar was the one who said, 'Kendrick would be cool.'"
Drake's reference song for Lil Wayne's track leaked online: Details explained
Drake's new version of Lil Wayne's song I'm Single recently went viral on social media. It was reportedly written by Wayne and while it was supposed to be included in the soundtrack of the album, I Am Not a Human Being, the song was eventually released separately.
The reference track was leaked on June 6, 2024, and the original song mentioned Drake as the songwriter. In an interview with VladTV in 2022, author Karrine Steffans shared that Drake served as a writer for Wayne's singles in the past. She stated that Wayne himself revealed the same to her and added:
"I was in the studio with Wayne listening to something that Drake had written 'cause Wayne can't write like that. And he'll be honest about it. He only writes a certain way."
Steffans added that Wayne never had trouble having Drake as a songwriter and that the latter was showing him how to change his ideas into a narrative and ensure that the "story comes back around." She described it as a "skill" and continued:
"That's a storytelling skill. [Not] everybody can do that. There was a particular song that Drake had written or helped him write that would help him do that."
Notably, Wayne's last project was a mixtape titled Tha Fix Before Tha VI and it came out in September 2023. Despite receiving a negative response, it grabbed the 40th spot on the US Billboard 200.
