Hip-hop icon Gucci Mane has once again set the music industry abuzz by offering an extraordinary $2 million for two new artists to sign to his newly established record label, SO ICY MILLIONAIRE. The news, however, has sparked a wave of reactions from fans.
On July 5, 2024, Mane posted a video of himself on Instagram and X(formerly Twitter) holding bundles of cash in hand and many displayed on the table. He revealed that he had launched a new label and wanted one female and one male artist for his label to join. In an Instagram caption, he wrote:
"Who wanna be tha next millionaire??? I got 2mil ready! 1milli for tha next male SUPERSTAR & 1milli for tha next female SUPERSTAR! I gotta a brand new record label SO ICY MILLIONAIRE! Tag the hottest unsigned artists now & DM ME ! #SoIcyMillionaire. "
However, the proposal has led to a wave of humorous and cautious responses, with many suggesting on social media platforms that they would instead prefer to live longer than to sign his record label.
"Will I be signing a life insurance too? 🌚," one person said.
"Bro shut that label down lol," another person said.
Many on his Instagram post suggested similar responses, suggesting that after some time of signing with the label, the artists will allegedly end up in either a penitentiary or a graveyard.
Moreover, many on X took the opportunity to try to be on his label. Some suggested that being on the label would be a "blessing."
"@gucci1017 I don't even want the money ! Just being on the label is a blessing enough, I don't need the money! Let's build ? Millionaire mindset, Billionaire Mindset, Trillionaire Life! Do it for the culture plus I got some flavors that's really going to set the tone 😤 Don't sleep," one person wrote.
"Bro, I got a the deepest underground catalog full of hits & high quality records. Tap in with me. Let's make this bread! 🤝💯," another wrote on X.
"They're ready for me Gucci," one person said
In addition, some humorously commented and said if the artists would get the "$1017 coin," reflecting his record label 1017 Global Music.
"Nah. Don't tell me we are about to get a $1017 coin," one person said.
"Bruh. Lemme get one of them so I can run my food truck back up. Haha," another person said.
"I just wanna sell you som hooks or tracks," one netizen commented.
The cautious responses from fans stem from concerns that many attribute to a perception that his label artist often faces unexpected grave situations, as past signees have either faced untimely deaths or ended up incarcerated. Gucci Mane has yet to respond to these comments and the surrounding humor.
The reason behind wary reactions to Gucci Mane's proposal
Netizens refused to sign with Gucci Mane's record label due to concerns over the unfortunate outcomes experienced by previous signees. Most recently, on June 11, 2024, Mane's signed artist, Enchanting, died at a hospital in Dallas.
As the cause of her death was not immediately identified, fans were quick to speculate that it was Gucci Mane's record label that allegedly caused the untimely demise of a young rapper.
She was signed to Gucci Mane's 1017 label in 2020. According to a News Week report on June 12, the young rapper died due to an alleged drug overdose.
Enchanting was the seventh signed artist with Gucci Mane, who faced unexpected tragedy. On December 22, 2022, Big Scarr, the artist of the 1017 Records label, accidentally died from an alleged prescription drug overdose.
Meanwhile, other Gucci Mane signed artists, including Pooh Shiesty and El Foogiano, are incarcerated. According to Pitch Fork, Shiesty, in 2022, was sentenced to 5 years in jail after pleading guilty to federal conspiracy charges.
Also, Foogiano has been serving his 5 years of jail term after cutting off his ankle monitor and violating probation.
On May 7, 2024, Mane appeared on his wife's podcast, All Things Keyshia Ka'Oir, and asked why most of his artists end up in jail. To which the producer suggested that he also had a history of incarceration and he sees a lot of him in those artists. Mane said:
"Well, that was how I was going back and forth in jail. I try to help those artists that I see a lot of myself in [them]. I feel like if I'm not helping them, who else is going to help them? Nobody sees that part of the story."
However, there has been no substantiated evidence linking the deaths or incarcerations of artists to Gucci Mane's record label.
