Shawn Mendes recently appeared for an interview with John Mayor for his SiriusXM show, How’s Life, where he seemingly spoke about his ex-partner Camilla and his rumored partner, Sabrina Carpenter. In the preview clip of the episode to be telecasted on December 12, 2024, Shawn Mendes said:
“I’m with someone. Two days before going to hang out with my ex, I express I’m going to hang with my ex because I have unresolved feelings. Maybe instead of two days, it could have been two weeks.”
Mendes continued:
“The biggest lesson I’ve heard is no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”
While Shawn Mendes did not name any person, social media users are convinced that the singer was talking about Camilla Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter, as he allegedly rekindled his relationship with Cabello during the time he was supposedly dating Carpenter.
Billboard also reported that a few songs from Sabrina's recent album, such as Coincidence, Sharpest Took, and Taste, reportedly spoke about the singer's love interest who reconciled with his ex-girlfriend. However, none of the three have publicly said anything about the alleged love triangle.
Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello were seen together during the 2023 Coachella, almost two years after announcing their breakup
Shawn Mendes and Camilla have known each other for a decade, as the duo first met at the 2015 Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. Having met at several events, the duo started working together and released many songs like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Senorita, Shameless, Lost in Japan, and This Love.
The rumors about the two becoming a couple grew strong in 2019 as many netizens started spotting them publicly. Cabello and Mendes soon emerged publicly with their relationship, from dinners to vacations to red carpets and other events.
Furthermore, in November 2019, Shawn Mendes spoke to Entertainment Tonight and admitted that the duo had been dating since July 2019. He said:
“We haven’t been dating for that long. We have been dating since July 4th officially.”
Thereafter, Cabello also spoke to Rolling Stone during the same month, where she expressed how the two instantly connected. She said:
"I really bonded with him as more than a friend. I think he did, too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career. I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together."
Cabello continued:
"It was just weird. An energy was there from the beginning, but after that song, we didn’t spend as much time together.”
However, by November 2021, the couple had separated and announced their breakup in a joint statement. The duo said:
“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
The duo then met again during the first weekend of the 2023 Coachella, where they were allegedly seen kissing and indulging in PDA. A source also spoke to Page Six and said:
“Shawn and Camila remain friends with a lot of love and history between them, but they aren’t dating again. They’ve stayed in touch since their breakup and decided to meet up at Coachella since they were both going.”
In the next few months, they were seen together in New York City. However, as per Elle, the rekindled romance did not last long, as Shawn Mendes spoke to Entertainment Tonight again and disclosed how the duo had separated.
While Cabello and Mendes' past relationship made headlines, neither Carpenter nor Mendes has confirmed the rumored love triangle. Meanwhile, social media users continue to share their opinions on Mendes' comments about the speculation.
