"I always wanted to do music for real" - Baby Storme on how she became an artist

In an October 2023 interview with Paper magazine, Baby Storme spoke at length about how she became a musician and who her musical inspirations were. On being asked whether she had always wanted to get into music, Storme said:

"I grew up singing in the choir. When I was three, I taught myself piano and I always wanted to do music for real, but I just didn't think that it was something attainable. Then when I got older, and I went to college, and I realized I didn't like college, I was like, ‘I might as well just follow my dreams and do what I want’. So I started as an independent artist then, and I'm still an independent artist now."

The singer also spoke about her stage name, explaining that it came up because she had always used silver braids and had silver hair. She added:

"Years and years ago, when I first started doing music, I just used to always have silver hair — I would wear silver braids. And that was just my signature look for years. So eventually, everyone would just compare me to the superhero Storm. Then I just put the ‘baby’ in front of it. Yeah, it's very anticlimactic but that's the story."

Baby Storme described her music as belonging to the genre of "alt-pop", comparing it to the "alternative ‘80s grunge element." She added that while many of her songs are commercial in nature, some are also based on only piano music. Overall, she believed "alternative pop is pretty fitting."

In the same interview, Baby Storme named Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Britney Spears as artists who inspired her when she was young. The singer revealed that she enjoys consuming a wide range of music, from "pop to alternative to rock to classical to rap" but never had one particular inspiration.
