Ariana Grande recently apologized for snubbing Cassandra Peterson, aka Elvira, backstage reportedly seven years ago. The pop star came under fire after the horror legend shared that Grande was her shadiest celebrity encounter during a Q&A session at Knott's Scary Farm in California on October 18.
Elvira mentioned that the We Can't Be Friends singer was dismissive of the former when she asked if they could take a picture together. This reportedly happened backstage in one of Elvira's shows and after the actress gave Grande and her 20 guests tickets for the show and took pictures with them. The actress further mentioned that the pop star left even before her show started.
Also known as the Mistress of the Dark, Elvira's story went viral, and the actress posted a screenshot of an article recapping her encounter with the popstar on her Instagram. When Ariana Grande saw it on October 21, she apologized for "offending" the actress.
"I sincerely apologize for offending you so," Grande wrote.
The Grammy-winning singer also thanked the horror legend for being "so nice" to her mom during their meeting backstage. Grande said that her mother gushed to her about how "lovely" it was to meet the actress then.
She added that her mom might have a different feeling about it now, given the controversy, but said that she would talk to her about it.
Ariana Grande noted that "we all have our days" and sent her love to the actress before saying that the Mistress of the Dark star will "always be our queen of Halloween."
Ariana Grande shares her version of meeting Elvira as she comes under fire for snubbing the horror legend
As Elvira's recollection of the encounter with Ariana Grande went viral, the Hairspray Live! star tried to shed light on the issue by sharing her version of the story. In her comment under Elvira's Instagram post, Grande mentioned that she didn't remember their meeting, citing an anxiety attack at the time. She wrote:
"Disheartened to see this. I actually don't even remember getting the chance to meet you because I had an anxiety attack."
She also defended herself from her alleged rude behavior by giving her version of the story, further writing:
"To my memory, [I] left before the rest of my family (this was around 7 years ago and at the time I was really not great with being in public crowds and loud places)."
It isn't the first time that Ariana Grande has been tapped with a "diva" behavior headline. She opened up about the effect of the media narrative on her during her May 2020 interview on Apple Music's Zane Lowe Show.
The God Is a Woman singer claimed that she stopped doing interviews "for a really long time" because people would try to say something for clickbait or twist her words. Grande further said:
"I would defend myself and then people would be like, 'Oh she's a diva.' And I was like, 'This doesn't make any sense.'"
She also pointed out that women, especially those in her position, are usually spoken about differently than men, which makes her "want to quiet down a little bit."
Ariana Grande is currently gearing up for the release of the first part of her movie Wicked, where she plays Glinda, The Good Witch. The movie is slated for a November 22 theater release in the US.
