Singer Shawn Mendes clarifies comments he made about ex-flame Camila Cabello during a recent interview. During his appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast on Monday, September 30, 2024, the Treat You Better hitmaker opened up about his current relationship with Cabello, stating:

"Camila and I have done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other."

Later, when a fan commented, "They don't play about each other," on an X post about the interview, Mendes replied, "No we don't." This prompted user @th1nkinfast to ask him to clarify the comment in an Ask Me Anything session hosted by the singer. He replied:

"I guess to be honest it came from a place of being a little annoyed with all the projection over the last few months about us. I’m usually pretty good at just watching all the 'noise' go by but lately it’s been kinda bugging me feeling human I guess."

As news of the development spread, internet users were quick to react. One fan commented:

Many empathized with Shawn Mendes, commenting on the difficulty of navigating relationships in public. Here are some comments seen under his post:

"you guys supported each other over so many years of both of your lives, it would be silly to stop that support now :’)" one user remarked.
"And that should be the final answer for all those haters and confused people!" a fan added.
"must be difficult having your relationships so public but i do think you’re handling it all pretty well <3" ay commented.

However, there were several others critical of Mendes' remarks. One even referenced the alleged love triangle of him, Cabello, and Sabrina Carpenter.

"ur fans have been bodyshaming and dissing her all these years AND YOU NEVER DEFENDED HER till now??? Just say you want to profit from the love triangle so they'll stream your fuckin álbum," another argued.
"where were you when camila got bullied? weirdo," @ikarennning wrote.
"what projection? not one but TWO women exposed you for treating them both like sh*t and you wanna call the backlash "projection" and "noise"? man, bye. you are not the victim you're trying so hard to be." one reacted.

"It's so hard not to be affected by it"—Shawn Mendes about public scrutiny

In a separate tweet, Shawn Mendes told his fans that he wanted to be honest with them and explain his feelings. He explained it felt "intimidating" to be "honest and vulnerable" online where words are easily "twisted."

The Canadian singer stated that he wanted to let them know that he, too, supports them, adding, "All the rest is just noise."

During Shawn Mendes' interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, he again expressed getting affected by the comments about his relationship with Camila Cabello.

"No matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it's so hard not to be affected by it... this is real love and it’s confusing and hard. "

He stated he was lucky, adding that the Havana singer was an amazing human being. Talking about their romance, he stated it was "brutal," adding that:

"Love is a lot, but partnership is more than love and I think it has a lot to do with how you support each other in your day-to-day life and really being honest about who you are. And making sure that someone that you're with is in support of that and doesn't have to bend themselves entirely to be in support of that and vice versa."

Shawn Mendes noted that both he and Camila Cabello still text each other.

Cabello mirrored his sentiments in her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast in March. She told host Alex Cooper that their relationship was "not a fit" and "didn't feel right." She explained that she loved him, but they were better as friends.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello first sparked dating rumors when they dropped their 2019 hit, Señorita. Just a month later, they went public with their relationship when they were spotted walking hand-in-hand in West Hollywood. Mendes even flew to Miami to be with Cabello during the pandemic.

In November 2021, the pair announced their split. They briefly reunited during the 2023 Coachella but called it quits by June.

Shawn Mendes has not publicly reacted to the fan reactions.
