This came after Lil Nas X talked about the mixed emotions he had about the reception of his country music in 2019 in an interview with the BBC on May 20. He compared the same with the 2024 response of Beyoncé's and Shaboozey's country music. Shaboozey opened up about Lil Nas X’s comment about his new song’s success
Recently, on Thursday, June 6, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, ET's Rachel Smith talked with the country singer Shaboozey. There, he opened up about what Lil Nas X said about his music on May 20.
In response to Lil Nas X's remark, he stated that he thought Nas had produced a monumental moment by getting Billy Ray Cyrus to appear on Old Town Road, and that the graphics were incredible. The Start a Riot singer also wished him luck in all of his endeavors.
Furthermore, the Let It Burn singer also talked about the frustration of being taken off the Billboard chart as Lil Nas' song faced the same fate, considering how enormously successful the song had become.
He continued, saying:
"I mean, the song was everywhere! You couldn't get away."
Shaboozey went on to say that he believed Lil Nas X would always have a place in the genre. About the same, he said:
"I think anybody's welcome to music, you know? If you create, and you're authentic with what you're creating, there's always a space for you. So, you know, if he wants to come back, I'm pretty sure he can come back."
This happened after Lil Nas X expressed his happiness at the success of other Black musicians during the interview with the BBC. While doing that, he also talked about Shaboozey and Beyoncé's recent album Cowboy Carter.
However, he also talked about his song Old Town Road, which he had released with Billy Ray Cyrus, being taken off the Billboard Country Charts five years ago. Addressing the appreciation that country music gets in 2024 and comparing the same with his music back in 2019, he said:
"I wish this would have happened for me. I wasn't even able to experience this."
Lil Nas X was referring to his song Old Town Road which he released in 2018 and got immense attention for it. After spending 19 weeks at the top, the smash continued to be the longest-running number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
BBC recorded that even though the song was successful in the pop category, there was a lot of controversy when it was released in 2018 because it wasn't included on the US country music charts. Billy Ray Cyrus, another country music legend and singer Miley Cyrus' father, later collaborated with Lil Nas X on a remix of the same song in 2019.
Lil Nas X has not made any comments about Shaboozey's statements in the interview as of yet.
