Katy Perry's upcoming sixth studio album, 143, is set to release on September 20. It will include collaboration tracks featuring Kim Petras, 21 Savage, Doechii and J.I.D. The album will be her first release since 2020's Smile.
Katy Perry's new Lifetimes music video is under investigation by Spanish officials
Katy Perry released her first single, Woman's World, from her upcoming album 143 on July 11 and faced negative reception and critcism for being produced by Dr Luke since he had been sued by singer Kesha for sexual assault.
The second single from the album, Lifetimes, released on August 9 and has also met with controversy regarding the shoot of its music video in the Balearic Islands in Spain. After the video was released, the environmental department of Balearic Islands declared on Tuesday (August 14), that an investigation will be conducted regarding the video shoot.
The department alleged that Katy Perry's team did not obtain the required and adequate permission to film the Stillz-directed music video on the islands. The video features Perry partying on the Meditterenean islands while singing her latest track.
The investigation will probe into alleged damage to the islands for the shoot. BBC reported that certain protected sand dunes from S'Espalmador island that were included in Katy's shoot, were of "great ecological value."
Ecological officers will be investigating possible damage to the sand dunes. However, Katy Perry and her production team will not be charged with “crime against the environment” as photos and videos can be authorized by request.
The ministry that is in charge of ecological conservation in the area said,
"in no case had the production company requested authorization from the ministry to carry out the filming", leading to an investigation probe.
A spokersperson for Perry's production team told THR that the local video production company had assured them that the "necessary permits" were already secured. The team reportedly learnt that one permit was still pending but they were given a verbal agreement to continue. They added,
"Our local crew on July 22 applied for a permit for this specific location with the Directorate-General for Coasts and Coastline. Our crew received verbal approval on July 26 to proceed with the filming on July 27. We adhered to all regulations associated with filming in this area and have the utmost respect for this location and the officials tasked with protecting it."
Meanwhile, both of Katy Perry's singles, Woman's World and Lifetimes, did not do as well as expected in the charts. Lifetimes featured in the US Spotify daily 200 chart for only one day by peaking at no 198 on the release day. It fell off the very next day. It ranked no 145 in the global Spotify chart, but fell off once again the next day.
Woman's World also received negative reviews from critics and fans alike. It peaked at no 63 in the Billboard Hot 100 for only one week. It is the weakest performance for a Katy Perry single, at the time of writing.
Perry also faced widespread backlash for working with alleged s*xual abuser Dr Luke on both of her singles. The producer was accused of r*pe and s*xual assault by Perry's fellow singer, Kesha.
