Rap commentator and media personality DJ Akademiks recently commented on Lil Yachty's supposed lack of support for Drake in his highly publicized feud with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar.
In response to a fan critiquing Lil Yachty for not standing behind Drake, DJ Akademiks, in a live stream on May 19, said that Drake needed a "delusional friend" who would support him no matter the context.
"Yachty, and I f*ck with you, but I gotta agree with this fan. If I'm Drake, I need a delusional friend with me," DJ Akademiks said.
This came after Yachty discussed the feud in a recent episode of his podcast, A Safe Space Pod. The rapper and Drake are frequent collaborators, and Lamar even name-dropped the former in his diss track, Euphoria, as an alleged ghostwriter for Drake.
DJ Akademiks claimed Drake needed to make some new friends
DJ Akademiks has been an avid Drake supporter for a long time, defending him during the rap battle with Kendrick Lamar. The rap commentator also alleged that Drake is in frequent contact with him and uses him to pass information to people.
He has keenly been following Drizzy's feud with Lamar, which saw the hip-hop industry witness a week of constant diss track drops, with either rapper throwing shocking allegations toward each other.
DJ Akademiks also commented on Drake's friends, including his frequent collaborator, Lil Yachty, who chose to maintain a neutral ground and did not come to his aid. According to Hot New Hip Hop, he stated that if he were Drake, he would be counting on a "delusional friend" to be by his side.
"I need the friend that I'm mad drunk in the club with and I'm stumbling all over the place and I stepped on somebody's foot by mistake but then that person shoves me and rather than tryna figure it out like, 'Oh, actually you stepped on his foot first,' my delusional friend just comes over my shoulder with a punch. 'Why the f*ck you touching Ak?!'" DJ Akademiks said.
"We can talk about the other sh*t later my n*gga. I need my delusional friends right now. That's what we need. I'ma keep it a bean, Drake needs one of those," he added.
What did Lil Yachty say about the Drake-Kendrick Lamar beef?
DJ Akademiks's comments came in response to Lil Yachty talking about the feud between Drake and Lamar on a podcast episode on May 16, 2024. According to Billboard, the rapper claimed he “didn’t really want anything to do with” being name-dropped in Lamar's Euphoria, which had the lyrics "Yachty can’t give you no swag neither, I don’t give a f*ck ‘bout who you hang with.”
“So many people kept calling and texting me with excitement of my name being used and for me it kinda just felt like… I really didn’t want anything to do with it. I got a ton of respect for both of these guys. Honestly, it was a cool thing to watch. I learned so much. It was an honor and blessing to be able to experience it firsthand,” Yachty said.
He also maintained a neutral stance when asked to comment on who won the beef, clarifying that he thought it was a draw for now. But he added that Drake was "deemed a loser" before the battle started because people disliked him.
Lil Yachty admitted he told Drake, “I don’t feel like you won or lost.” He said that the controversy wouldn't cost Drake his career and that the rapper would be able to salvage his music after this, going on to appear in people's Spotify wrapped at the end of 2024.
“Rappers have lost, and then lost everything. But this hasn’t happened to Drake. He will still be in everybody’s Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year and he’ll still drop hits and control the summer. I think Kendrick made very smart moves and I don’t think Drake would disagree.”
Drake and Kendrick Lamar's feud was the talk of the town in April and May. The feud that had been ten years in the making escalated when Lamar dissed Drake and J. Cole in a guest verse for Future and Metro Boomin's Like That.
This came in response to J. Cole and Drake's First Person Shooter in December 2023, in which the former stated that the duo and Lamar were the "big three" of the hip-hop industry. In Like That, released in March 2024, Lamar fired back at J. Cole and Drake with the lyrics, "Motherf*ck the big three/ N*gga it's just big me."
What ensued was a back-and-forth diss battle between Drake and Lamar that saw the two rappers release four diss tracks each. One of Lamar's tracks, Not Like Us, took the music industry by storm with its catchy beats, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release on May 4.
