Kendrick Lamar’s sound engineer Nicolas de Porcel recently spoke to EngineEars and revealed the whole process behind his diss tracks, as he worked with the rapper for many Drake-targeted songs. Stating how it was “very high pressure,” Kendrick Lamar’s sound engineer said:
“It was a little crazy. I got a call and it was like, ‘Stay on call, you’re gonna be working. I would get the song and like six minutes would elapse and they’d be like, ‘How we looking?’ It was very high pressure. As Dot was releasing these records, it was like, I was turning in the masters… it would drop like 12 minutes later. It was amazing.”
Nicolas de Porcel worked with Kendrick Lamar for three of the diss tracks, Euphoria, Meet the Grahams and even the recent hit, Not Like Us. It is also worth noting that all three of these tracks were released in the same week, as Euphoria was released on April 30, 2024, while the other two tracks were released in the first week of May 2024.
Furthermore, Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us, for which the sound engineer, Nicolas de Porcel worked with the rapper, has gained massive success as the rapper released the video of the song on July 4, 2024, just two months after the release of the audio track.
The song was released via Interscope Records and was produced by Mustard. As per Rolling Stone, the lyrics of the song were written by Lamar himself.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef escalated after the release of Like That in March 2024
While Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s rap war has been the centre of attraction for many months, it is worth noting that the two rappers have collaborated in the past, as Kendrick Lamar featured in Drake’s album Take Care in 2011. Furthermore, Drake was also seen contributing to Lamar’s album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City in 2012.
However, the battle of raps started in 2013, when Kendrick dissed Drake and other rappers in the song Control. Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef is a decade old, however, after being silent for many years, the rap war escalated as Lamar released a diss track for Drake, called Like That in March 2024.
This prompted Drake to release tracks like Push Ups and Taylor Made Freestyle in April 2024. Furthermore, Lamar then replied to Drake with another diss track, called Euphoria, which was released on April 30, 2024.
He also released 6:16 in LA in May, to which Drake responded by releasing Family Matters targeting Kendrick’s personal relationships, especially with his fiancé Whitney.
The rap battle got serious when Lamar released Meet the Grahams and Not Like Us in May 2024. While many rappers and people from the music industry continue to pick their sides and pour in their thoughts on the rap battle, Kendrick’s music video of Not Like Us released in early July also left the world speechless.
Showing him dancing with his kids and fiancé, Lamar doing pushups and showing Drake’s OVO owl, the music video was also a clear diss for Drake.
The video of the song has received more than 86,000,000 views on YouTube. However, the two rappers have not yet addressed the feud publicly in any interview.
