Country singer Oliver Anthony released a new video on YouTube on Wednesday, December 4, titled What I’ve Learned from the Music Industry So Far… where he shares his experiences with followers. To netizens’ shock, he shared his negative review of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album, which comes under the country music genre.
The Rich Men North of Richmond musician revealed that an unnamed music industry member pitched an idea to him of making him successful by praising the Single Ladies crooner, an idea that Oliver Anthony rejected. He revealed in the video:
“One of the guys I worked with, he wanted me to make some stupid f**king post about Beyoncé’s country album, about how it was good, even though it was complete trash. It makes me just want to throw up.”
Discussing Bey’s rendition of Dolly Parton’s hit song Jolene, Anthony said:
“Even half trying to listen to the beginning of, like, her version of Jolene, it’s just total cringe.”
Cowboy Carter was the first-ever album by a Black woman to reach the number-one spot on the Billboard country albums chart. Bey’s song Texas Hold ‘Em from the album also broke the record of being the first-ever song written by a Black woman to claim Billboard’s top spot on their country song chart and their all-genre Hot 100 chart.
Oliver Anthony criticizes the Cowboy Carter album in latest YouTube video
As the social media sensation continued to opine on Jolene, Oliver Anthony claimed that society has become “degenerative” as they prefer Bey’s Jolene song. He went on to explain how a music industry executive advised him to promote the Formation singer on social media in hopes of the duo collaborating. Oliver Anthony said:
“So I was supposed to make a post, basically trying to associate myself with Beyoncé in hopes of us doing some kind of song together, but you know, how many people do that? How many artists do you follow on social media that have never even looked at their social media, and you’re just reading words and posts and things that were written by somebody that you’ve never even met that aren’t the artist, that don’t even necessarily work directly for the artist”
Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter featured collaborations with Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Post Malone, and Miley Cyrus.
Elsewhere in the video, Oliver Anthony discussed making concert tickets affordable for fans. He claimed that several artists and their management are “greedy” to keep high prices for tickets. He went on to share how he had $25 tickets available at his concerts.
Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter was snubbed by the CMA Awards
To fans’ surprise, the Sorry singer was also snubbed by the Country Music Association Awards as they had not nominated the chart-topping Cowboy Carter album.
Luke Bryan, the co-host of the 2024 CMA Awards, was asked to discuss the same on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM show Andy Cohen Live. Bryan seemingly claimed that just because Bey released a country album, it did not mean that she deserved to be nominated. He said:
“I don’t know how many albums did [Beyoncé] sell. You know, I know she had one song… Listen, I’m all for everybody coming in and making country albums and all that. But just declaring that just because she did one…”
Bryan went on to state that Bey should familiarize herself better with country music singers and “high five us.”
Meanwhile, Bey released a Cowboy Carter artbook that included “exclusive, never-before-seen imagery,” inspired by the album, which was currently sold out.
