Shawn Mendes recently appeared on Jay Shetty’s podcast, On Purpose, where he spoke about his past relationship with Camila Cabello. During the interview, that aired on September 30, 2024, Mendes stated how the two have been private about their relationship, and continue to make sure that they “would never cross a line” while creating music that mentions their personal life.

Talking to Jay, Shawn said:

“I mean, honestly, I think Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private lives. Little fire of love for each other, because no matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it, and to be swayed by it, and to be inspired by it, and to desire it because people desire it, or to hate it because people hate it, and it’s just human.”

He continued and stated that he feels it is “extremely hard to just protect each other, and protect that love,” as he said:

“So I don’t really see or care what people say about my love life or my relationships because it’s just, it’s honestly too detrimental to the actual relationship itself that I’ve become pretty strict on that part of it, you know, but it’s crazy, man. This is not a movie.”

Shawn Mendes concluded by accepting that it can be tough to get away with it on social media, and hence, he does not really “go on social media anymore.”

For the unversed, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello dated each other for two years, having started dating in 2019, and later announced their break up in 2023. The two have even sung and worked on many songs together, including Senorita, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Christmas Song.

During the one-to-one with Jay Shetty, Shawn Mendes also spoke about how the two managed to protect their relationship online, as Mendes stated:

“For me and for us, I think immense honesty, just like over-communication. You know, like, ‘I felt this way when I was doing this interview, and I said this thing, and I felt weird, and I’m sorry if it came off like that. You know, I love you and...it just immediately cuts through any type of assumption that I could make or she could make from anything.”

He continued:

“And, you know, we’re both amazing at that. I’ll be the first to text her. She’ll be the first to text me. And we just, as long as we’re good, we’re good. All the noise is just noise, and that’s been a huge part of it.”

While Shawn and Camila’s relationship ended a while back, the two sparked dating rumours once again in 2023, when they were seen kissing at Coachella in April. At the time, the two denied being together again. However, as per Buzzfeed, the duo could often be seen together in April and May of 2023.

It is also worth noting that the two announced their split, and specified how they will “continue to be best friends,” reiterating that the two have broken up on good terms. Shawn Mendes and Camila have also been supportive of each other, which was conveyed by Mendes in his interview with Jay Shetty. He stated that Shawn and Camila both respect each other’s “artistry.”
