Mustard was recently interviewed by PEOPLE magazine, where the DJ talked about a possible Kendrick Lamar collaboration on his 2024 album which didn't pan out in the end. In the interview - which was published on January 17 - the 10 Summers producer was asked if he still used to have any pinch-me moments.
Responding to the question, Mustard cited his 2024 collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, saying:
"I have no idea what's actually going on. I only attribute it to God and because nobody could have told me two years ago or a year ago that me and Kendrick would have the biggest song together because I was trying to get him on my album."
The DJ continued:
"He was supposed to be on the song “Ghetto” with [Young] Thug and [Lil] Durk and we didn't end up doing it, but it was like nobody would've ever been able to tell me, 'Yeah, you and Kendrick are going to have a crazy song, you're going to have another two songs that come out after.' I would've never believed no sh*t like that."
Mustard was the producer of two songs in the Money Trees rapper's 2024 album, GNX - Hey Now and TV Off. The latter peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after its release.
The Parking Lot producer was also behind Kendrick's biggest hit last year - his chart-topping Not Like Us, released in May 2024.
The song, which broke several streaming records, has also been nominated for the upcoming Grammys in five categories - Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Music Video.
Mustard shared his reaction to hearing about the Grammy nominations
Elsewhere in the PEOPLE interview, the subject of Mustard's nomination for Grammy's Producer of the Year award was brought up. The interviewer asked the 34-year-old about his first reaction to the Grammy nominations. Mustard answered, recalling:
"So I was actually in my condo with my newborn and my girl. We were watching the nominations on TV and I don't know why, but all I was hoping is that Not Like Us had got nominated for a Grammy. That was my expectation. As long as I get one nomination for Not Like Us, I'll be happy."
Confessing that he hadn't expected to be nominated in the producer of the year category, Mustard said:
"So they started running down a list of the nominees and stuff and then they said 'producer of the year' and nothing clicked in my head to be like, 'Would I even get nominated for that?' And when they started listing the names and they said my name, I was just like, 'What the F?'... It was really crazy."
DJ Mustard also released his fourth studio album, Faith of a Mustard Seed, last year, as a follow-up to his 2019 album, Perfect Ten. The album peaked at number 50 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and number 11 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.
In his PEOPLE interview, the Rack City producer was asked if he thought of Nipsey Hussle - the late rapper who gave the album its name - in its creative process. The DJ responded with:
"When you're scared of stuff, it's like when you go to school for your first day and you've never gone to school before. You just petrified. When you're having a kid, you're petrified. But it's always a beautiful outcome... So I think just having the courage and having the faith to do the rap song or just the album in general is what I got from thinking about Nip."
The upcoming 67th Annual Grammy Awards is going to be held on February 3, 2025.
