As the MTV VMA Awards were held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Katy Perry bagged the award for the most iconic performance for her 2013 hit, Roar. As she accepted the award, she expressed how happy she was, and thanked her fans, as she called them “KatyCats.”
As soon as the news about Katy Perry winning the VMA went viral on social media, several netizens began reacting to it, as many commented about how 'the most iconic performance' award should have been awarded to Lady Gaga, instead of Katy Perry.
As X user @PopBase posted about Katy Perry winning the award, one netizen noted how Lady Gaga was “robbed” of the award. The comment read:

Furthermore, netizens mentioned how Lady Gaga was iconic in her song, Paparazzi, and hence, she was more deserving.

Meanwhile, there were also a few netizens who criticized the decision to give the most iconic performance award to Katy Perry.

Katy Perry has won 7 VMAs over the years
As Katy Perry won the most iconic performance award, many social media users were left disappointed, as they clearly stated how the singer did not deserve to win the award.
Katy Perry did not just win the award for the most iconic performance, she was also awarded the MTV Video Vanguard Award for her impact on people and culture through her music.
Accepting the award, Katy Perry said:
"It's incredible because that means I have had fans for a lifetime. My fans are showing up for me like never before. It's incredible to see that I started on MTV with 20 seconds and now I'm going to have 10 minutes. Life is really happening!"
During her speech, she also gave a piece of advice to her viewers, as she asked people to “be present every single day.”
It is also worth noting that to date, the singer has won seven VMAs, including two of this year’s. In 2011, she won the Video of the Year award for her song, Firework.
Thereafter, she also won the Best Collab and Best Special Effects for her song, E.T. in the same year. The following year, in 2012, she won the Best Art Direction for Wide Awake. Lastly, she also won the Best Female Video for Dark Horse in 2014.
