Lil Durk's (a.k.a. Durk Devontay Banks) attorney stated that the murder-for-hire charges levied against his client are false and lack evidence. A statement to XXL Magazine on Thursday, December 5, 2024, by the rapper's legal team, read:
"The claims in the indictment against Mr. Banks are false and lacking in the most basic due diligence."
In October 2024, U.S. Marshals arrested Banks near the Miami International Airport for reportedly plotting the murder of OTF (hip-hop group Only The Family) rival Quando Rondo (real name Tyquian Bowman) in 2022.
Per authorities, the rapper placed a bounty on Rondo for his alleged hand in the killing of OTF member King Von. While Rondo was not killed in the resulting shooting, his cousin Saviay'a Robinson died. Since then, the rapper has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Lil Durk's attorneys call out prosecutors for allegedly using "rap lyrics" as evidence
Last month, Lil Durk hired Atlanta-based lawyer Drew Findling, who previously defended Cardi B and Quavo, to represent him. Durks' attorneys Findling, Marissa Goldberg, Jonathan Brayman, and Christy O'Connor shared a signed statement with XXL Magazine slamming the prosecution of using "rap lyrics" as "evidence." They wrote:
"When you see an artist’s rap lyrics quoted as 'evidence' against them, it is a glaring indication that there is no real evidence against that person."
They referenced the rapper's indictment, dated November 7, that alleges that he "sought to commercialize" Robinson's death by "rapping about revenge" on his collaboration with Babyface Ray, Wonderful Wayne & Jackie Boy (2022). The lyrics on the track include:
"Told me they got an addy (go, go) / Got location (go, go) / Green light (go, go, go, go, go) / Look on the news and see your son / You screamin', 'No, no' (p*ssy)."
Prosecutors claimed that the track "explicitly references audio from a news clip taken shortly after S.R.'s (Robinson) murder where T.B. (Rondo) screamed 'no, no!' after seeing S.R.'s dead body."
The statement continued to add that Lil Durk was a "Grammy Award winning artist, a dedicated father, and a loving husband." It continued to add that the rapper frequently gives back to his community in Chicago through his Neighborhood Heroes Foundation, which has organized "more than a dozen charitable events over the last few years."
"He is looking forward to fighting against these false allegations in court," it concluded.
According to a November 2024 press release by Federal Authorities, Lil Durk was allegedly arrested as he attempted to flee the country. The rapped had three international flights booked to Italy, Switzerland, and Dubai.
It alleged that the credit card used to purchase the flight tickets to carry out the murder linked back to the rapper and OTF. The release claimed that Lil Durk "coordinated and paid for five co-conspirators to travel from Chicago to California a day before the murder."
The five co-conspirators with ties to OFT named in the release were Kavon London Grant (a.k.a. Cuz or Vonnie), Deandre Dontrell Wilson (a.k.a. DeDe), Keith Jones (a.k.a. Flacka), David Brian Lindsey (a.k.a. Browneyez), and Asa Houston (a.k.a. Boogie).
Lil Durk is charged with one count each of conspiracy, use of interstate facilities to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death, using, carrying, and discharging firearms and a machine gun, and a charge for possession of firearms in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death.
He is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles with a bond hearing scheduled for December 12.
