Lily Allen pushes back on "clickbait articles" and "distorted propaganda" after receiving hate and "death threats" for returning her pet dog because it ate family passports.

In a lengthy statement that the English singer-songwriter shared on X on Sunday, August 25, she slams the tabloids for their stories about her "dumping her puppy." She mentioned that their "deliberately distorted" articles had led to her receiving backlash online, saying:

"People have been furiously reacting to a deliberately distorted cobbling together of quotes designed to make people angry and as a result, I've received some really abhorrent messages including death threats, some of the most disgusting comments have been all over my social media channels."

While Lily Allen admitted that she's okay, she also noted that it had been a "really tough few days," and that the backlash has impacted her and her family. The Smile singer also called for people to "stop acting on clickbait articles" if they haven't done their due diligence and for engaging with misinformation designed to "profit from sewing division and tearing us all apart."

Lily Allen has "never been accused of mistreating an animal" amid internet scrutiny for returning her dog

Elsewhere in the post, Lily Allen said that she isn't new to rescuing dogs, sharing that she's been doing it "consistently" throughout her life since she was four. With that comes being good at "ascertaining a dog's needs," she said, but the last week has been "very distressing" for the English singer. She said:

"I have never been accused of mistreating an animal, and I've found this whole week very distressing."

Allen also explained in detail the story that tabloids left out about her rehoming her rescued puppy. She said that they got her a shelter in New York and "loved her very much," but Mary's severe separation anxiety was a huge issue. Allen recalled in the August 22 episode of her Miss Me? podcast that they returned their pet after eating her kids' passports.

They've worked with a behavioral specialist and a professional trainer who was recommended by the shelter to address the problem because they can't leave her alone for more than ten minutes. They also had one of the volunteers from the shelter dog sit Mary when they were away. But after several months, everyone agreed that their home may not be the best fit for their rescued dog.

Lily Allen also shared about Mary's new home in her X post, saying that they know the person who is now taking care of the dog. She said that they "couldn't meet Mary's needs," and because her happiness and welfare are a top priority for them, they decided to return her. That said, Mary was rehomed within 24 hours of her return to the shelter.
