Kehlani defended their identity as a lesbian in a recent TikTok
The 29-year-old After Hours hitmaker has always been upfront about their s*xual identity. The singer referred to themself as a queer person in 2018 on X and, in April 2021, announced that they identified as a lesbian on Tik Tok.
On June 30, 2024, the singer took to TikTok to defend their sexual identity from people who were confused about their past relationships with men.
"Bringing up the fact that I had a child, or bringing up ex-boyfriends from four years ago, or bringing up situations when I was 20...I'm 29. I'm will be 30 next year. I don't know why there's this inability to fathom that I'm a raging lesbian," they said.
The Good Thing singer added,
"Yes, my music is gay; who I perform to and for is the gays. If you're stuck in the past, it's between you and your God. If you're a man still bringing up my ex-boyfriends, just say you wanna f**k," they added.
Kehlani also made another video where they explained that "de-centering men" really helped them elevate and make positive changes to their life.
"I was bisexual my entire life, and then I came out as a lesbian almost four years ago now. But when I realized recently actually all of the f**king elevation in my life that has come from de-centering men in every area of it [does a chef's kiss gesture]."
They have also talked about identifying as a non-binary person. The topic was first brought up in a 2019 interview with Diva magazine, where they stated they were "definitely on the non-binary scale" but preferred to use "she" pronouns.
However, in a 2021 interview with Byrdie Magazine, they expressed their preference for "they" pronouns, saying:
"I don't mind when people say 'she' at all, but something feels really affirming when people say 'they'. It feels like... you really see me."
On the music front, Kehlani released their fourth studio album, Crash, on June 21, 2024. The 13-track album debuted at No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 200 on the first week of July, and the lead single After Hours touched No. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100.
