Pop singer Olivia Rodrigo called upon Chappell Roan on stage at her Guts tour show at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. Before inviting Roan on stage, the Drivers Licence singer announced:
"I've known this next artist for about four years now. I absolutely adore her. I think she is one of the most singular, inspiring, powerful artists I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, and I’m so excited because she’s gonna sing one of my favorite songs of all time."
Roan then walked on stage and proceeded to tell the crowd, "We’re gonna sing a song, and we’re gonna teach you a dance." The two singers performed a duet of Roan's Hot to Go along with the track's signature steps.
As news of Chappell Roan's surprise appearance spread, internet users were quick to react. One stating:
"I love when female artists support each other."
Netizens continued to gush about the development.
"This is so ICONIC!!" a fan wrote.
"why am i not in that crowd rn," another added.
"PLEASE BE THERE TOMORROW PKEAAAAASSSSSEEEE," @michagrrla commented.
Not everyone was happy with Olivia inviting Chappell. A few pointed out that Rodrigo always "latches on to newer artists" who go mainstream.
"One thing about Olivia Rodrigo, she’s going to latch on to newer artists out of the blue once they go mainstream," another remarked.
"That’s a surprise twist that no one saw coming," one user wrote.
"Unexpected and electrifying duet!" added another fan.
Chappell Roan has previously opened for Olivia Rodrigo
Last night, both singers jumped on TikTok to participate in the I hope she plays... trend. "I hope she plays 'Hot to Go!'" Rodrigo states before the camera pans to Chappell Roan, who replies, "This is an Olivia Rodrigo concert, b*tch." Olivia then shurgs before a video of their Hot to Go! duet plays.
Hot to Go! is the ninth single from Chappell Roan's debut studio album, Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The track was hailed as a queer cheer anthem, much like Village People's YMCA. It peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.
This is not the first time Chappell Roan has made an appearance on Rodrigo's shows. Roan previously opened for one of the latter's San Francisco shows on her debut tour, Sour. She also opened for the Guts tour from February through April 2024.
Roan also did background vocals for a few of Olivia's songs, including Lacy and Obsessed from her second studio album, Guts, and Can’t Catch Me Now from the recent Hunger Games movie. In a January 2024 interview, Chappell Roan told Capital Buzz:
"We all work out of the same studio and Dan (Nigro) is like ‘Are you free right now, can you come help? So I go over there and sing harmonies cause it’s really nice on a song to have different tones. I love that (Olivia’s) open to having another vocalist; she’s so sweet to me."
Following her second show (August 21) at the Intuit Dome, Olivia Rodrigo will take her Guts tour to Bangkok for a two-night performance at the IMPACT Arena on September 15. The Bad Idea, Right? singer will be on the road through October 2024.
