On August 27, a video surfaced online showing rapper Lil Uzi Vert inhaling a substance from inside a balloon during one of their studio sessions. People around them were heard saying to the camera something like, “Our son is back. We got Uzi back. We got him back.”
The footage has now garnered severe traction online, with fans speculating that Lil Uzi Vert was inhaling nitrous oxide, just like Kanye West, who was recently accused by his former Chief of Staff, Milo Yiannopoulos, of being addicted to laughing gas.
Amid this now-viral video, the internet is having diverse reactions. For instance, X user Evan, who goes by the handle @crzballer, commented on Kurrco’s post of Uzi’s clip by writing:
“Maybe Yeezy did set the trend.”
Many joined the conversation on the platform and shared similar responses, blaming Kanye West for allegedly influencing other rappers even in addiction.
“Kanye’s influence is crazy,” a person wrote.
“Kanye put him on the lingo,” another person wrote.
“Ever since Ye got on everyone wanna use it,” one person wrote.
Others called out Lil Uzi Vert, Kanye, and other fellow rappers for engaging in “whippets,” which refer to cartridges of nitrous oxide used as a recreational inhalant drug.
“Whippet Cult,” a netizen wrote.
“Just wait until whippets reach critical mass and we start seeing the new underground of rappers that explicitly talk about nitrous,” another netizen wrote.
Meanwhile, some expressed concerns about Lil Uzi Vert and the rest of the industry and urged them to stay out of addiction.
“All rappers. What’s going on, Hollywood? Been going on,” an individual wrote.
“Day by day hour by hour we’re losing u Uzi,” another individual wrote.
Lil Uzi Vert has a history of substance abuse
Lil Uzi Vert struggled with addiction and substance abuse last year and spent seven months in rehab. In an interview with O32c magazine, the Philadelphia rapper claimed they did not want to go to rehab initially but was later convinced by their Roc Nation label owner, Jay-Z.
"I didn't want to do it, but I had to and I can say now that it was a great thing to do. The first month and a half were hard. But after that, it was easy, because the people there became my family," the 29-year-old explained.
The Luv is Rage rapper added that they were skeptical whether it would “work” but “surprisingly” found out that rehab was “pretty effective.” The multiple-time Grammy nominee also claimed that sobriety helped improve their creativity and enabled them to “think more clear[ly],” make “sense” of everything around them, and no longer create “random music.”
They also urged fans to stay away from addiction and claimed that it would “change your life” and make you “look better.” Notably, following the death of rapper Lil Peep in 2017 from an accidental fentanyl overdose, Uzi announced that they would quit consuming drugs and pledged sobriety.
As for Kanye West, his former associate Milo Yiannopoulos made several social media claims that the rapper was addicted to laughing gas. Milo held the rapper's dentist, Dr. Thomas P. Connelly, responsible for getting him "hooked." However, Ye’s spokesperson refuted the allegations.
