On December 24, a video of Brooklyn rapper Joey Badass seemingly involved in a fight at a clothing store went viral. The incident reportedly took place in an NYC store on December 23.
The video has no audio, so the details of the argument are unclear. Joey Badass appears to have a heated conversation with a man in a grey hoodie, while a third man stands nearby without getting involved.
Shortly after, the clip cut to a different camera angle where a scuffle ensued. It was imprecise who started the physical attack, however, in a zoomed-in view, Joey Badass could be seen pulling the grey hoodie over the man's head and throwing punches.
The third man from the initial camera view and another man attempted to break up the fight while a bystander had their hands covering their mouth in shock. The altercation further moved on the ground before the footage ended.
The video made the rounds on social media, prompting reactions from netizens.
"Never let a man get this close", one X user wrote.
"They were arguing about who actually created the pyramids", joked one person.
"He gave him a Joey WhoopA*s", one more quipped.
"When you trying to use logic but n***az is too dumb, so violence is only respected", opined another.
Some referred to Joey's antagonistic portrayal of Kadeem "Unique" Mathis in the Power Book series, implying the rapper channeled a similar energy in the video.
"N***a turned from Joey to Unique real quick", commented one X user.
"Unique was tryna tell him "we want allem corners!!!" #SouthSide", wrote another.
"Joey was actually not the aggressor… he was being extra, like many new york n***as and was probably being dramatic. But he didnt start the fight… he finished it though", said one person.
Joey Badass' NYC fight video surfaces after the rapper was honored with a day dedicated to him
Last Friday New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared December 20 as Joey Badass Day to honor the Pro Era rapper. The announcement was made at the annual Million Dollar Giveback: Hip-Hop Holiday event organized by NYC's Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and Rainbow Apparel Co.
DYCD commissioner Keith Howard announced:
"We are thrilled to honor artist Joey Bada$$ for his commitment to DYCD and youth, and his ImpactMENtorship program."
Joey Badass launched the ImpactMENtorship Program in 2023 to provide free guidance to young men of color across the US to attain financial and professional success. The rapper also reportedly celebrated the second anniversary of his mentorship program on December 20.
Joey was also named the artist in residence by the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in September.
