In March 2024, at the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards, Bailey spoke about her decision to keep her pregnancy a secret, saying:
"There was no way in hell I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone. Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that."
She added:
"With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for damn sure, no one on the planet, was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world."
In February 2024, speaking on The Jason Lee Show, Halle Bailey's boyfriend, DDG, revealed that the pregnancy was "unplanned." The rapper shared that they found out about the pregnancy just after the premiere of The Little Mermaid, where Bailey starred as the titular mermaid, Ariel. He said:
"We weren't aiming for a baby, but it just kinda happened. Both of us have the same interest in being parents. And I feel like she always wanted to be a mom. We always kind of just give off that energy, and I always wanted a kid. So, from there we just made the decision to go through with it."

"I have severe, severe postpartum [depression]. And I don't know if any new moms can relate, but it's to the point where it's really bad," she said.
Bailey continued:
"Now going through it, it almost feels like you're swimming in this ocean that's like the biggest waves you've ever felt and you're trying not to drown. And you're trying to come up for air."
The actress ended the video by urging everyone to be considerate of people's feelings. She revealed that even celebrities can go through tough times despite looking hale and hearty from the outside.
