Katy Perry left fans and critics displeased following the release of her seventh album 143 on September 20. The pop album follows her 2020 album Smile, which also failed to reach chart success. As her latest drop continues to garner flack online, Reddit users noted that it has also gotten the lowest rating on reviewing platform Metacritic.
Based on the website, Katy Perry’s latest music drop boasted a score of 34. With the few who reviewed it, nobody had a positive reaction to the album, with four having negative reactions and six others having mixed feelings about the music. It is worth noting that only 10 people had reviewed the album on the website at the time of writing this article. As per Reddit user u/hyxon4 on the r/popculturechat subreddit, 143 was “the lowest-scoring album on Metacritic since 2011.”
As Katy Perry's album garnered hate from critics, others also were displeased to learn that most of the songs on the album were produced by Dr. Luke. For those uninitiated, the latter was in the midst of a lawsuit brought forward by Kesha, who alleged that he r*ped and emotionally abused her.
Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, denied the allegations with him, and the singer also announced that they reached a settlement later on.
Meanwhile, the album garnered negative reviews in mass from multiple publications, including The Guardian, The Independent, and NME, among others, giving it a 2-star review.
Several netizens have since taken to social media to react to Metacritic’s review. Internet users relentlessly blasted the album online while discussing the website’s ranking. Some comments online read:
“man, i remember how much everyone was willing to give her another chance before it was revealed that Dr. Luke was one of the producers of a song about female empowerment lol honestly, she did this to herself,” a Reddit user said.
“Katy put more soul into defending herself, the singles, and working with Doctor Puke (Luke) than she put into the album. After listening to it a few times, I think, sadly, it's true. It's just very empty - it feels like it's a bunch of songs she recorded for past albums and never used because they didn't measure up,” another platform user said.
A few songs from the album included All The Love, Nirvana, I’m His, He’s Mine, and Woman’s World among others. Meanwhile, other reactions read:
“Fun-fact: it's also the worst reviewed female album of all-time on Metacritic,” a netizen commented.
“I don’t like this album, but the bad reviews don’t seem to be about the music but rather people’s disappointment in Katy herself and her recent public downfall,” another Reddit user said.
“I'm over her as a person and can't listen to any of her music anymore so it doesn't even matter is this was a platinum album lol,” an internet user said.
Publications commented that the album “isn’t good,” “painfully dated,” and that Perry seemed to be “grasping for ideas.” Meanwhile, other reactions read:
“We’re reaching levels of floppery I didn’t even think were possible,” a netizen said.
“I hope her ego is nice and bruised from this, because girl wtf was that? Worked with a demon, and it wasn’t even profitable,” a platform user said.
Inside Katy Perry’s 143 album as music drop garners multiple negative reviews online
Katy Perry re-entered the music scene after four years with the album’s single Women’s World, which was co-written and co-produced by Dr. Luke. Other singles, like Lifetimes, which have been noted as dance tracks, have been compared to those of Beyoncé’s and Dua Lipa.
Meanwhile, Business Insider criticized the album relentlessly, with them calling her song Gimme Gimme, which featured 21 Savage, a “plinky snoonzefest.”
Speaking about Katy Perry’s lyrical prowess, they said, “Perry was never considered a lyrical mastermind.” They went on to rate the album a 1.8/10.
Other songs in the album included Artificial, All The Love, and Crush, amongst others.
Katy Perry also appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast and addressed the backlash she faced after collaborating with Dr. Luke. She commented that the lyrics came from her in reality, and he simply “facilitated” her. Perry said:
“I understand that it started a lot of conversations and he was one of many collaborators that I collaborated with. But the reality is, it comes from me. The truth is, I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that. One of the writers, one of the producers. I am speaking from my own experience.”
Katy Perry had not responded to the intense heat the album had garnered at the time of writing this article.
