John Legend recently discussed his wife Chrissy Teigen's abortion in 2020 while arguing against the Roe v. Wade overruling that now allows some states to have abortion bans. Appearing on the Club Shay Shay podcast on October 23, the singer criticized the government for interfering with medical decisions that were extremely personal to people.
Abortion has been a topic of contention this election season. Speaking to the host Shannon Sharpe, John Legend said that it was best for the government to stay out of reproductive care, adding that Trump wanted to take credit for Roe V. Wade being overturned.
"My wife was well past 15 weeks when she had to have an abortion. She was miscarrying and bleeding out. Her life was in danger, and for the government to say, 'Oh, we need to evaluate this to make sure you're sufficiently dying before you can have an abortion'," he said.
The singer continued:
"That's what they're saying in Texas and Georgia and all these states where they have Trump abortion bans. They're saying the government needs to evaluate whether you are sufficiently dying before you can have an abortion. Not your doctor. Not you and your family. The government. No, stay out of it!"
John Legend's remarks were, however, met with mixed reviews on social media. Some argued against his reasoning, alleging that he was providing inaccurate information about abortions.
Many pro-life people also criticized John Legend for his statement, claiming it was full of "false narratives."
"Except that’s not at all how it works… this entire story is a lie meant to deceive people," one person tweeted.
"False narratives to fool yall. They will use all these Hollywood deviants to do it," another person added.
"He’s an idiot. Ending Roe gives power to the states as it should be. This should have never been federal. There will be states that are more liberal and states more conservative. Live where your values belong," someone else commented.
"This isn't the reality of situation in any state. This made up scenario is completely wrong," another person wrote.
However, pro-choice people sided with John Legend, adding that women should be given bodily autonomy to make their own decisions.
"Thank you! Stay out of this very personal decision and stop trying to control women. We are not state property!" one person commented.
"I am a woman in every state in this great nation but my rights are not the same in every state," another person added.
"I’m so angry that this mistreatment of women is happening across America. If Alito was sick he wouldn’t have to wait till he was almost dying. I hope he goes down in history as a corrupt and terrible justice. Give women their rights back," someone else wrote.
John Legend and his wife lost their son at 20 weeks
John Legend and his wife, Chrissy Teigen, lost their son, Jack, when the latter was 20 weeks pregnant due to a pregnancy complication. At the time, the couple told the public that Teigen miscarried. However, Teigen later clarified that she realized she underwent an abortion during her panel at “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation” summit in 2022 in the aftermath of the Roe v. Wade overruling.
Jack was the couple's third child. Twenty weeks into the pregnancy, Teigen was admitted to the hospital for excessive bleeding. She was diagnosed with "partial placental abruption", a medical condition where the placenta starts to detach from the uterine wall. Her doctors told her that they would have to induce the baby to save her life.
During her panel at the summit, Teigen recounted the experience, adding that she had to make many "difficult and heartbreaking decisions." She said that the couple soon understood that their son would not survive and that continuing the pregnancy would only affect her health.
“Two years ago, when I was pregnant with Jack, John and my third child, I had to make a lot of difficult and heartbreaking decisions. It became very clear around halfway through that he would not survive, and that I wouldn’t either without any medical intervention,” she said.
While they initially called it a miscarriage, Teigen added that she realized that she had an abortion when discussing the overturning of Roe v. Wade with her husband. She said that while she was empathizing with people who underwent an abortion, John Legend made her realize that she had one.
“I fell silent, feeling weird that I hadn’t made sense of it that way. I told the world we had a miscarriage, the world agreed we had a miscarriage, all the headlines said it was a miscarriage. And I became really frustrated that I didn’t, in the first place, say what it was, and I felt silly that it had taken me over a year to actually understand that we had had an abortion,” she added.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are the parents of four children - daughters Luna and Esti, and sons Miles and Wren.
