"NOTHING about Selena gives Queen Britney" — Internet reacts to Selena Gomez being one of Britney Spears’ top choices to play her in a biopic

Britney Spears will reportedly play a significant role in her next biopic. She is also considering several well-known actors to play the lead roles, with Selena Gomez and Natalie Portman at the top of the list.

The director of Wicked, Jon M. Chu, recently talked about his upcoming project, which is based on Britney Spears’s memoir, The Woman in Me. On the red carpet at the Golden Globes on January 6, 2025, he told Billboard that the popstar would be “very involved” in the movie.

On the other hand, as per Life & Style’s January 25 report, a source claimed:

“Britney adores Natalie Portman and thinks she’s such an incredible actress, she’d love to see her cast and thinks with the right make-up artist she could easily be transformed.”

The source further added:

“The same goes for Selena Gomez. She’s someone Britney loves as a person and as an artist, she thinks she’s mighty talented and knows she’d also have her own history as a child star to draw on, which would make things easier.”

Once the news was published on X by @ThePopTingz, netizens took to the platform to express their opinion on the same thing. Some criticized the choice and said Selena doesn’t give off Britney vibes. One user wrote:

“High on the list” / The bar must be low. / No offense but NOTHING about Selena gives Queen Britney.”

Many others also said similar things, blatantly critizing Selena. One user even remarked that she is “not even a top 15.”

“Many people obsessed with Selena, not even a top 15,” another X user posted.

Meanwhile, other X users posted suggestions for who they felt would be better suited to play Spears. Names like Camila Cabello, Addison Rae, and Miley Cyrus came up.

“Let’s have @Camila_Cabello please!!!” suggested one user.

“Selena Gomez???? When Addison Rae is right there???” said another user.

“i think they should do an unknown for young britney and cheryl texiera for adult britney!” wrote another user.

“Even Miley Cyrus would be a better pick in my opinion,” another X user wrote.

Talking about Britney Spears’ upcoming biopic with Billboard, director Jon said:

“She’s going to be very involved. I haven’t really started anything fully yet, but she will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, and an approach, but it’s very early.”

Although he acknowledged that the screenplay hasn’t been drafted yet, the Wicked director told The Hollywood Reporter on November 13, 2024, that the film would be released in November 2025.

According to the same insider, Britney wants this film to be “absolutely top-notch.” They said she has such faith and regard for Jon and his abilities that she is certain they will work together to create something truly remarkable.

Additionally, they stated that Selena Gomez and Natalie Portman were Britney Spears’ top choices for on-screen personas. As per the same source, Britney loves Natalie Portman and believes she is an amazing actor. She would love to see her cast and believes she could easily be changed with the appropriate makeup artist.

They went on to say that Selena Gomez is in the same boat. Britney adores her personally and artistically. She believes she is incredibly gifted and is aware that it would be easier for her to draw on her past as a child star.
