Famous American musician Tom DeLonge made his way to the headlines after his recent reaction to a review of Blink 182’s Lollapalooza performance. According to a review published on August 5 by The Daily Illini, the rock band’s performance was labeled ‘cringe-worthy’ and ‘repulsive’. As seen on his Instagram post, Tom DeLonge’s had a satirical response to the review. He wrote in the caption,
“Oh my god, I’m dying hahaha f***, I love this band”.
As understood from his reaction, the singer seemed to have not been bothered by the review, despite it having further negative remarks about the band's roguishness. However, he posted the screenshot of the same review on his Facebook wall as well, but this time with a different caption.
The review claimed that Tom DeLonge's co-lead Mark Hoppus had repeatedly made vulgar remarks throughout the show. As a result, according to The Daily Illini, the band’s overall performance, no matter how good, was not enough to compensate for the comments. The review has now become viral across social media platforms including X.
The duo, during the performance, had also allegedly cracked jokes about sleeping with the other's mother. Moreover, the humorous exchange continued throughout, which drew further criticism. The review however said that despite all these, the performance which took place on August 4, was filled with high-spirited songs.
Following the fiasco, fans seem to have sided with the band, especially Tom DeLonge. The post has received more than 2500 comments so far. A particular comment in his post indicated that Lollapalooza expected nothing but only this from the band. Many even commented that the mothers apparently were happy, indicating that they loved it, thus countering the attacks in the review.
Tom DeLonge’s fans seemed energetic throughout the band's performance
Fans have posted video clips and photos of Blink 182’s performance. This year, they played their hit songs such as Up All Night, Aliens Exist, I Miss You, More Than You Know, and others. The band also performed their brand new song Can't Go Back, for the first time, in the concert. Before they began with the song, Mark Hoppus said,
"This next song is so brand new, it hasn't even been mastered yet. It just got sent out to be mastered the other day. Right, Travis? Comes out on our deluxe album later on this month."
Tom DeLonge's band even had a hidden surprise in their performance. During their closing performance of Dammit, they interpolated the lyrics from Chappell Roan's Pink Pony CLub. An X handle shared that their performance witnessed a '115,000' strong crowd. Reportedly, some fans even wish that the band would tour again next year.
Lollapalooza 2024 was held from August 1 to 4. It was the festival’s 20th year in Chicago.
