Megan Thee Stallion, who has been vocal in endorsing US VP and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential elections, recently condemned people refusing to vote. Appearing in Billboard's September 4 cover story, Megan said it was "irresponsible" of people to refuse to vote.
“I don’t like it when I see people saying, ‘I’m not voting. F**k it.' What the f**k are you talking about? You’re going to complain about what you don’t like but you’re not going to help the cause? I think that’s very irresponsible because if you don’t like what Trump has going on, why even aid in him being the president again?,” she said.
Many on social media praised the rapper for her stance and interest in politics, with some wondering if she was shading Cardi B.
In Rolling Stone's May 2024 cover story, Cardi B had said that she had no intention of voting this year as she didn't "f**k with" either Donald Trump or Joe Biden. This was before Biden stepped down and endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
Many agreed with Megan Thee Stallion's remarks about people not voting, saying that not voting and then complaining about the government was weird.
"People who don’t vote and complain abt the government are weird," one person tweeted.
"Voting was a right that women and Black people didn’t have for a very long time. People died to change those laws. Please vote," another person added.
"Not voting at all is only helping that evil man get back in office," someone else wrote.
"Oh Megan spilled massively like always! We will all be voting for Kamala!" another netizen commented.
However, others opined that Megan Thee Stallion shouldn't involve herself in politics as an entertainer and rapper.
"If you're asking Megan Thee Stallion about politics, you shouldn't vote," one person commented.
"Says the woman paid by a candidate to do a free concert at their rally…" someone else added.
"She makes a valid point there. Get out and vote!! For Trump," another person wrote.
Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B have both endorsed Kamala Harris
On July 21, President Joe Biden announced that he would withdraw from the 2024 presidential elections and endorsed VP Kamala Harris in his stead. Harris was met with a wave of support from celebrities, including Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion.
While Cardi had previously announced her disinterest in voting in the upcoming elections, she was among the first rappers to endorse Harris after Biden exited the race. Cardi also extended her support to Harris well before Biden made his announcement.
In a June Instagram Live session, she told her followers that it was selfish of Biden to continue his campaign, adding that he should pass the torch to Harris. When the news broke on July 21, Cardi took to social media to express her excitement, saying:
“STOP PLAYING WIT ME!!!! been told y’all Kamala should’ve been the 2024 candidate. Y’all be trying to play the Bronx education, baby this what I do!!!”
She has since supported Harris several times on social media, standing up against the misogynistic rhetoric that came the VP's way. Cardi criticized conservative author Alec Lace for calling Harris the "original hawk tuah girl" on live television, referencing the viral meme alluding to oral s*x.
Similarly, Megan Thee Stallion backed Kamala Harris in her campaign. The Houston rapper performed at Harris's campaign rally in Atlanta on July 30, proclaiming she supported the VP with her catchphrase "Hotties for Harris." She also spoke up for Harris when she performed at Lollapalooza in August.
In her Billboard cover story, Megan Thee Stallion said she felt blessed to live in a time when a black woman could be the president of the US.
"To be alive in a lifetime where a Black woman or a woman at all could be the president, I feel so blessed. This is what the future is about. We really about to get a strong, Black female in there. I feel like America needed a woman to come in here and put a woman’s touch on it. It’s been going a little crazy lately, and we need somebody to put their foot down. I feel like Kamala, she gon’ do that," Megan Thee Stallion said.
In other news, Megan Thee Stallion released her third studio album, Megan, on June 28, 2024. The 18-track album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The rapper has one more date left in her 'Hot Girl Summer Tour,' with the final show in NYC on September 26.
