Influencer DDG (a.k.a. Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.) teased new music with incarcerated rapper Tory Lanez, who recorded the verse in prison. On Wednesday, December 12, 2024, the internet personality took to his social media to share a preview of his track, suggesting it is set to come out "this Friday."
The video shows Darryl in a studio vibing to the song before holding his phone to the microphone and allegedly playing Lanez's verse through its speakers. The in-post caption claimed:
"Tory Lanez recorded this over the jail phone."
The video went viral, with netizens commenting on whether the song was actually being played on the phone. One stated:
"Phones not even on speaker."
Many netizens continued to criticize DDG for clout chasing.
"Your dedication to being lame AF should be studied," one sarcastically stated.
"Shouldn’t the ear piece be by the mic if he’s rappin from the phone?," another criticized DDG.
"How creatively bankrupt and desperate for clout are you that you’re willing to get a prison verse from Tory Lanez, after it’s been well established that he shot Megan?" a person wrote.
On the other hand, some expressed their excitement for the upcoming song.
"The walls can’t stop Tory from cooking," a fan commented.
"This gonna be a hit," another praised.
"yoooooo tory was the perfect feature for this track i’m hyped its finally releasing," one user stated.
Tory Lanez's recording equipment was recently seized in prison in September
DDG claimed Tory Lanez recorded the song via telephone while being locked up.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot back in 2020. The high-profile case involved the two rappers and Megan's former friend, Kelsey Harris, getting into a drunken roadside argument. Lanez was found guilty in December 2022.
Earlier this year, the Canadian musician began dropping new songs under the name The Prison Tapes which included the tracks Basement and Appellate Court. However, in September, prison officials confiscated Lanez's recording equipment.
His legal representative, Ceasar McDowell, explained the situation, noting that inmates were "strictly forbidden from having recording devices for various reasons." Tory Lanez later released a statement on his Instagram, asserting:
"I was shut down because the ‘HIGHER UPS’ figured out what I was really doing with The Prison Tapes, and how many inmates were being helped in a life-changing way because of them."
Tory Lanez claimed that since being imprisoned, he saw Black and other minority inmates being mistreated and receiving the most "cruel, illegal, and unfair" punishments. He alleged that he was going to use the money made from selling the records for the legal representation of his fellow inmates to help them appeal their sentences and go back to their families.
In October, an appellate court released an order stating that they would consider all of Lanez's petitions together. At the time, his legal team filed separate petitions, including one saying that the gun and bullet fragment connected to the shooting were missing, another for wrongful imprisonment, and a third after the rapper's driver submitted a post-trial statement.
At the time, Lanez's representatives incorrectly claimed in an Instagram post that the court had accepted that the rapper was innocent, which led to misinformation spreading across social media. Independent reporter Meghann Cuniff later debunked the false reports, sharing court documents on her X account.
DDG is yet to announce the details of his upcoming album, including its title and release date. He has not publicly reacted to the development.
