Several rappers joined Kendrick Lamar at his Kia Forum pop-out show on June 19 and Keenon Dequan Ray Jackson aka YG was one of them. Ray was mentioned in a positive light by Drake on his Kendrick diss track “Family Matters” released last month.
As this was Kendrick’s first concert after his notorious rap battle with the Toronto rapper, fans took notice of the guestlist and amidst others, YG’s attendance caught their attention. He performed alongside DJ Mustard on Big Bang”, "Toot It and Boot It”, and his 2014 track "Who Do You Love?" featuring Drake.
Despite YG hailing from Compton like Kendrick, in “Family Matters”, Drake name-dropped the 34-year-old rapper in Verse 1, portraying him as an ally:
“You know who really bang a set? My n*gga YG”
Thus, fans were amused to see YG joining Kendrick Lamar’s pop-out show. The rapper also vibed to Kendrick's chart-topping Drake diss "Not Like Us" during the concert. Several people took to X to post memes about how Dreezy might react after watching YG's performance at Kendrick's show. One person mocked Drake's choice to question Dot's supremacy in L.A.
"YG performed the song he had with Drake, then rapped every word and cripwalked to “Not Like Us”. He isn’t even a crip. This sh*t wild", commented one person.
"Of course the crowd was the loudest when they played YG’s Drake feature", wrote another.
"i know drake regret saying that yg line n***a on stage dancing to not like us", chimed in another X user.
Several other artists were also mentioned, who, fans claimed, Drake would unfollow after seeing them at Kendrick's concert.
"Drake unfollowing Russell Westbrook, DeMar DeRozan, YG, Tyler the creator and whoever else was on that stage AT THIS VERY MOMENT!", one user wrote.
"YG there and it pans to LeBron? Oh drake it's never been more over", another commented.
YG seemingly responded to namedrop on Drake's Kendrick Lamar's diss track "Family Matters"
After Drake released "Family Matters" on May 3 and mentioned YG as an ally while dissing Kendrick Lamar, the younger Compton rapper released a track titled "WEIRD" on May 25. In one part of the lyric, YG rapped:
"Weird-a** n***a (A** n***a), you n***as lame (You n***as lame)/ When it's smoke don't ever mention my name (Mention my name)/ You gon' have me jeapoardizin' my fame/ Jeapoardizin' the gang, jeapoardizin' where you hang, n***a"
Although the rapper did not directly name anyone, fans believe it was aimed at Drake for name-dropping him in "Family Matters", even though YG was not involved in the Lamar-Dreezy rap feud.
It is to be noted that Drake and YG have collaborated on a few songs in the past. In 2014, when YG debuted with his album My Krazy Life, the Canadian rapper featured on the single “Who Do You Love?” The song made it to rank 54 on Billboard Hot 100. The two later teamed up for the 2016 track “Why You Always Hatin?” from YG’s second studio album Still Brazy.
However, YG seems to share a closer bond with his fellow Compton artist Kendrick Lamar. He previously lauded Kendrick both as a rapper and a collaborator in an MTV interview:
“It's A-1 to be able to get somebody like that on my record”
YG added:
“I knew Kendrick before I blew up, he knew me before he blew up and be rocking with what I was doin' and I been rocking with what they was doin' so it's all love and respect.”
Furthermore, YG's collaborator and friend DJ Mustard produced the beats that Kendrick Lamar used in his Drake diss track "Not Like Us".
