Rihanna’s long awaited 9th album has been the subject of fan and media speculation for years. While the singer has told fans that a ninth album is definitely in the works, the release date and other details haven’t been officially confirmed yet.
In an exclusive by The Sun, released on August 13, 2024, it was reported that the elusive ninth album from the nine-time Grammy Award winner is set to be released soon. She is also seemingly in talks for a world tour in 2025 with Live Nation, and is reportedly on the summer 2025 headlining list for the popular Glastonbury festival in England.
According to a music insider (via The Sun) :
“It’s been a running joke how long Rihanna’s ninth album has taken to be released, but finally the wait is almost over.”
Ayra Starr and other artists could reportedly feature in Rihanna’s new album
The report by The Sun revealed that the Diamond hitmaker was originally tapped to perform at the Glastonbury Music Festival in 2023, but dropped out as a result of her pregnancy with her second child, Riot.
The singer’s Super Bowl performance was meant to be a prompt to a major comeback in 2023, which was put on hold for the singer’s family. The music insider further revealed in the exclusive that she had put away her previous work on the new album because she wanted a fresh sound.
The insider said:
"Over the years so many songs have been recorded with loads of different people, including Alesso and Diplo. She has gone from pop to reggae to hip-hop and everything in between. But because she wants it to sound fresh, and because of where Rihanna is at in her life, practically everything was scrapped."
The source further revealed:
“Some have been reworked but the majority was canned completely when she went back to the drawing board earlier this year. Rihanna has been back in the studio for a while now and things are finally coming together.”
The source also hinted at a later date for the release of the album because of the slow process of manufacturing vinyl. Her last album, Anti, released in 2016, featured star-studded vocal contributions from the likes of Drake and SZA, and according to insider reports, the upcoming one wouldn’t be any different, as she has teamed up with some of her favorite artists behind-the-scenes.
Nigerian artist, Ayra Starr, who was spotted with the Fenty mogul at the recently held Crop Over festival in Barbados, has been reported as a prospective featured artist on the new album.
Rihanna spoke with Entertainment Tonight in April 2024 and hinted that she already had songs for the new album that are “so good.” She added that her partner, ASAP ROCKY, who is set to drop his own much-awaited album in August 2024, loves the songs she’s been working on.
While it seems that Rihanna’s fans may finally be granted their requests, after years of speculations and reports, it remains to be seen if the album will be released sooner or later.
