Rapper Dequantes Devontay Lamar, a.k.a. Rich Homie Quan, passed away on Thursday, September 5, 2024. He was just 34. The unfortunate news was confirmed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner, adding that an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
There is no official word on the Atlanta-born rapper's cause of death. However, a report by TMZ, citing a 911 phone call made by a woman just before his death, suggested he died at his home.
The news rocked the hip-hop industry, with many taking to social media to mourn his loss. This included Megan Thee Stallion, who shared an Instagram story featuring a photo of the Type of Way rapper with the caption:
"RIP to one of the best (broken heart emoji)."

He earned mainstream prominence in the early 2010s with his single Type of Way, which peaked at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 12 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. His other songs include Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh), Walk Thru, and Ride Out.
Per a biography shared by the venue, Masquerade (in Atlanta), Lamar was the eldest of three siblings. Despite his dream of becoming a professional baseball player, the rapper eventually chose to pursue his passion for music.
As news of Qun's death made headlines, Boosie Badazz and Jacquees were some of the earliest artists to offer condolences. Boosie shared a series of tweets expressing his loss.
Meanwhile, Jacquees shared a picture of the rapper calling him a "legend."
"Rest in Peace my brother Rich Homie Quan. I love you for Life. #Richgang," he tweeted.
Quan was part of the cultural shift in the 2010s that reinforced Atlanta as the center of the rap and hip-hop world. Lamar, along with Young Thug, were core members of the hip-hop collective 'Rich Gang.' Rapper Quavo shared a photo of Migos with Rich Gang on his IG story with the message,
"May God be with us, never saw this being apart of our journey."
Alex Tumany, a mixing and recording engineer who has frequently collaborated with Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug, also mourned the rapper, sharing several posts on X. He called Quan the "nicest" person he ever worked with, adding that the news was "crushing."
"One of the nicest people I ever worked with and a true artist. Absolutely crushing news. RIP," Alex tweeted.
Fellow Atlanta rapper, 2 Chainz, who collaborated with Quan on tracks like Ah’chi, offered his prayers to RHQ's family, writing:
"Dam lil brother, we just spoke about shooting a video, special prayer for you and your family, and pray for any and everybody that’s dealing with something my condolences bru."
Playboi Carti, too, paid tribute to the RHQ, sharing a photo with the latter along with a clip of them together on his stories.
Quan's last project was the EP Family & Mula, which dropped in 2022. He last took the stage at the Gazebo Festival in Louisville in May 2024.
Rich Homie Quan is survived by his four sons.
