Authorities have reportedly confiscated Tory Lanez's recording equipment during a raid on his prison cell. The news was first reported by TMZ Hip-Hop on Monday, September 9, 2024, where Ceasar McDowell, the chief deputy on Tory's legal team, confirmed the incident.
For the uninformed, Lanez is currently serving time at the California Correctional Institution for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. Over the last few weeks, the rapper dropped several songs under the series Prison Tapes, including Basement and Appellate Court.
However, per McDowell, Tory Lanez's team inmates are "strictly forbidden from having recording devices for various reasons."
As news of the rapper's equipment being confiscated spread, internet users were quick to react. One subtly suggested that Roc Nation, who manages Megan, is responsible.
Many continued to express outrage at Roc Nation and its head Jay-Z (a.k.a. Jigga). Here are some comments seen on X:
"Cmon now. The n*gga in jail. Roc nation need to relax," a user commented.
"Jigga is insecure haha," another added.
"So basically that n*gga lied about the recording process to hide the fact that he had equipment in there," @tarius87 wrote.
Others defended Lanez, stating that those who took away his devices were jealous of the rapper.
"Tough break for the 'Prison Tapes' series! Hope Tory finds a way to keep his voice heard!" another fan remarked.
"Are they just jealous he’s a happy soul in jail?" @kuzylaught wrote.
"This is a shame, he was dropping heat," a user wrote.
Tory Lanez dropped new music every week before his equipment was seized
Tory Lanez had been dropping new music from prison every week before his recording devices were seized. Prior to the release of his first track from the Prison Tapes series, Wish I Never Met You, Tory Lanez shared a post on Instagram featuring a recorded call. In the call, he explained how he and his engineer figured out a way to put together music of adequate quality after trial and error. He stated:
"After about 20-something to 30-something f*ckups and mistakes, me and my engineer have finally figured out how to record music over the jail phone and still keep the quality as professional as I had it on the street."
The Canadian rapper continued:
"It's over. I done cracked the f*cking code, man. This means that not even these prison walls can stop me from dropping new music. It's crazy!"
Tory is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for the July 2020 incident involving Megan Thee Stallion and her former best friend Kelsey Harris. They got into a heated roadside argument after attending Kylie Jenner's pool party, which led to Megan being shot in the foot.
Following a lengthy trial in December 2022, the Canadian rapper was found guilty on charges of assault with a firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm, and negligent discharge of a firearm.
Several fans and rappers have since spoken out in support of Tory Lanez, asking for his release. This includes Drake, Meek Mill, and Fivio Foreign.
It remains to be seen what penalty the rapper will face due to the transgression.
