Actress Abigail Breslin is facing backlash after her tweet seemingly targeted at Katy Perry. The Little Miss Sunshine star took to her X to share Wednesday, July 10, 2024, to promote Kesha's music and add:
"I'm just saying... working with known abusers in any industry just contributes to the narrative that men can do abhorrent sh*t and get away with it."
July 11 also marked the release of the lead single, Woman's World, from Katy Perry's upcoming album 143. Dr. Luke, whom Kesha accused of drugging and r*ping her, is credited as one of the producers of the track. For this reason, despite the actress not directly referencing the singer, fans believe Abigail was throwing shade at Katy.
As the post gained traction, internet users were quick to react, with many calling out the negative comments. One user, referencing Abigail's TV show Scream Queens, remarked:
Many spoke in support of Breslin, expressing their gratitude for speaking out against abusers. Here are some comments seen under Abigail's X posts:
"Say it louder QUEEN!!!," praised one user.
"ignore them queen, thank you for speaking out against known abusers, i can’t believe that’s somehow controversial," added another.
"dont worry boo, haters gonna hate but your just showin love to an artist u love !!love ya," wrote another X user.
Others noted that the actress never named Perry in her post. Some even apologized for the mean comments she garnered.
"Ignore it. You did the right thing. You were brave and stood up for what’s right. Walk away with that, not angry bullies on an internet cesspool," added another.
"Omg all these people are so delusional… that’s the thing isn’t it.. he’s gotten away with it. People come to Katy’s defense but her name was no where on the OG post. Chanel #5 is an icon," commented one fan.
"Thank you so much for speaking up, and I'm sorry for the heinous responses you're getting – you're doing the right thing," wrote another fan.
At one point, Katy Perry's name was dragged into Kesha and Dr. Luke's legal battle
As Abigail Breslin's X post continued to garner negative attention, including those aimed at her career, the actress responded with a post stating she was a "long-time advocate against s*xual assault and domestic violence." She explained that she was allowed to "have a perspective," adding that she never said anything negative.
While Breslin was flooded with hateful comments on her post, Katy Perry, too, is facing the ire of her fans. On Monday, June 19, 2024, Rolling Stone reported that the singer is reuniting with collaborators including Luke, Stargate, Max Martin, and Sarah Hudson. Since then, fans have expressed disappointment with the Roar singer over her choice to work with Lukasz Gottwald (a.k.a. Dr. Luke).
Katy Perry and Gottwald have worked together on hit songs like Roar and Dark Horse. However, they stopped collaborating in 2013, after she released her album Prism. In 2023, Kesha and Luke settled their nine-year-long legal battle (following Kesha's claims of s*xual, physical, and emotional abuse, Gottwald counter sued for defamation).
At one point in their battle, Katy Perry, a former friend of Kesha's, was dragged into their lawsuit after text conversations between the Praying singer and Lady Gaga revealed that the former believed Perry too was assaulted by Luke. The E.T. singer, however, testified that the claim wasn't true.
In 2021, the Hollywood Reporter, citing unsealed court records, revealed Gottwald testified that he lost $46 million due to Kesha's accusations. He estimated he lost $11.65 million from the sum that would have come through his collaboration with Katy Perry. To be noted, despite his claims of losing revenue, Dr. Luke has continued to collaborate on charting songs with singers like Doja Cat (Say So) and Nicki Minaj (Super Freaky Girl).
Despite settling, the Die Young singer never retracted her claims. Following Perry's announcement in June, Kehsa shared an X post that read "Lol," which fans think is a response to her former friend.
Katy's Woman's World, too, is facing similar criticism from fans. Many state it's ironic that in a song about female empowerment of the six people involved in the track, four were men.
Katy Perry has not publicly addressed the backlash at the time of writing this article.
