Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez is counted among the well-loved celebrity beauty brands by beauty fanatics and makeup artists alike. After launching in September 2020, the cosmetics brand is now available in 36 countries, a top seller at Sephora, is reportedly worth $2 billion, and now has a philanthropic arm Rare Impact Fund.

When asked about possibly selling her billion-dollar cosmetics brands during a recent interview with TIME Magazine, the Rare Beauty founder was quick to shut down the idea. Gomez said:

“I don’t have any plans on that, genuinely.”

What she does have are plans about the next line of beauty products for her brand for the next few years, she noted. The singer-entrepreneur also mentioned getting a lot of comments about Rare Beauty and how people have enjoyed the products from her brand, and it’s what gives Gomez “joy.” She stated:

“That’s what makes me most proud. When I’m able to have something like Rare or a single that people can relate to, I get so much joy when people say, ‘Hey, that helped me through a difficult time.’”

Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty products, from its line of lip colors and liquid highlighters to body and hair mists such as “Positive Light,” “Find Comfort,” and “Always an Optimist,” are designed with inclusivity in mind, from its shade range to easy-to-use packaging.

Selena Gomez talks about running Rare Beauty brand

With a music and acting career and a blossoming love life, running a billion-dollar cosmetics brand can be “overwhelming,” which Selena Gomez admitted. During the TIME interview, she said:

“I will admit it overwhelms me sometimes. I have this thing in my head where if I focus on the numbers, I’ll lose whatever it is that made Rare Beauty Rare Beauty. I never wanted it to be about making a lot of money and that’s it.”

Besides being one of the faces of Rare Beauty, Gomez is primarily focused on product development and the impact fund, leaving running the business to her managers, her lawyer, and company executives.

She also talked about where the brand is heading during an appearance at the 2024 TIME100 Summit in New York in April 2024. Talking about Rare Beauty’s immediate future and a potential sale, she said:

“I don’t think I’m going anywhere. I am enjoying this a little too much.”

Gomez added that her vegan, cruelty-free, and inclusive cosmetics brand is her “pride and joy.” She further noted that Rare Beauty’s community, which has grown in the four years since it launched, is what sets the brand apart from other celeb-owned brands and other cosmetics companies.

Talking about the community Rare Beauty has built, Gomez noted:

“That is what makes me happy every night when I go to sleep because it’s mission driven.”

Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty has organized events and experiences to connect with its community offline, from pop-up shops to beauty workshops and events centered on mental health. The brand has also introduced “Comfort Club” early this year, which aims to provide its community with a digital hub filled with strategies for finding comfort.
