Taylor Swift's private jet usage has been a point of contention among several environmental activists, who point out that the singer's CO2 emissions are severely impacting the earth.
Several activists on social media seemed relieved after Swift's long-running global stadium tour, 'The Eras Tour,' ended on December 8, 2024. For her tour, the pop star traveled to five continents, putting on a show for over 10.1 million fans in over 50 cities between March 2023 and December 2024.
Given her global stardom, Taylor Swift resorted to using her private jet to travel to all her shows for security reasons, clocking 98 trips this year. According to Simple Flying, an aviation publication, her total flight time added to 225 hours in 2024. While Swifties worldwide mourned the end of 'The Eras Tours,' environmental activists on social media seemed pleased with the decision, with one X user posting:
"She can’t hurt you anymore, Earth."
Many echoed this sentiment, claiming her private jet usage "single-handedly did a lot of damage."
"She single handedly did a lot of damage with her private plane," one person tweeted.
"Those 13 minute private jet flights sped up climate change by 10 years," another user added.
Others claimed that Taylor Swift's private jet usage will continue, joking about her taking her jet to the supermarket.
"Until she has to take a flight to the supermarket," one person wrote.
"No more flights till she craves some food 30 mins away," another person commented.
However, several netizens rushed to Taylor Swift's defense, mentioning other celebrities with higher CO2 emissions.
"She’s not even top 10 polluters with her 21 month long tour… think about that," one user wrote.
"I wish you guys had the same energy for all the people who use their planes way more often and they don’t even tour… we just saw a video of Christiano Ronaldo showing off his private jet and none of yall gave a damn," another person posted.
"It’s funny bc Ronaldo just get new jet but i don’t see you tweeting about this," someone else commented.
Taylor Swift owns a Dassault Falcon 7x jet
According to Fortune, Taylor Swift owns a three-engine Dassault Falcon 7x jet. The model can reportedly fly 6,000 miles without refueling and can accommodate 12-16 people at a time.
In 2024, the private jet made frequent stops in Nashville and LA (where Swift has homes) and Kansas (where her boyfriend Travis Kelce lives). The singer's jet usage raised eyebrows after Simple Flying reported she used approximately 80,000 gallons of fuel this year traveling between her shows, homes, and Kelce's games.
In June 2024, two environmental activists from Just Stop Oil in London hoped to protest against Taylor Swift's frequent private jet usage by breaking into Stansted Airport and tagging her jets with orange paint. However, the protestors mistakenly painted the wrong planes. According to Sky News, Just Stop Oil said:
“At around 5 am Jennifer Kowalski and Cole Macdonald entered the private airfield at Stansted airport where Swift’s jet is currently stationed. The pair painted two private jets using fire extinguishers filled with orange paint.”
Taylor Swift's private jet rides faced scrutiny over the years. Sustainability marketing agency Yard crowned her the "biggest celebrity [carbon dioxide] polluter” after an independent analysis in 2022.
According to Rolling Stone, Taylor Swift took 170 trips in the first half of 2022, emitting 8,293.54 tonnes of carbon. Swift's team responded in a statement to The Washington Post that she often loaned her plane to friends, adding the singer purchased "carbon credits" to offset her flights.
“Taylor’s jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals. To attribute most or all of these trips to her is blatantly incorrect,” the spokesperson said.
In February 2024, Taylor Swift threatened to take legal action against a student who tracked her jet paths and posted them online. Her legal team sent a cease and desist letter to Jack Sweeney, a University of Central Florida student, after he uploaded information tracking her flight's journeys using public data. The information tracked the duration of the flight and the CO2 emitted per trip.
Her team said the tracking was a security issue for the singer, who has been the subject of several stalking incidents. The student argued that the flight information was public and only offered an "incomplete sketch" of her location.
Following this, Taylor Swift encountered more criticism after many noticed the singer took a 13-minute flight to travel from one part of St.Louis to the other. After continued backlash from environmental activists about her private jet usage, Taylor Swift sold one of her jets, the Dassault Falcon 900, in February 2024, leaving her with the Dassault Falcon 7x as her only jet.
Other celebrities who have faced backlash over excessive private jet usage include Kylie Jenner, Jay-Z, and Drake. Jenner's 17-minute trip from LA to a nearby town in 2022 was widely criticized on social media.
