An online debate about the comparison between Beyonce and Michael Jackson reignited recently. The debate first started after the singer's performance at Coachella 2018 on April 14, according to a Billboard report from April 2018. At the time, internet users began arguing about whether Queen Bey had achieved the same level of fame as Michael Jackson.
According to a Forbes report dated December 18, 2024, the YA YA singer currently holds the record for receiving 103 certifications, the most by any female artist. In addition, she was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards earlier this year for her album Cowboy Carter.
On the other hand, MJ set the record for the most Grammy nominations in a single year, with 12 nominations in the 26th Annual Grammy Awards in 1983.
Meanwhile, on December 27, 2024, The Shade Room reignited the debate on Instagram by uploading a post about it. Afterward, many users took to the platform to share their reactions. One user even claimed that she isn't even better than Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson's sister.
"She not even better than Janet Jackson."
Many even took to X voicing support for MJ over Beyonce. Some claimed that she allegedly disrespected Michael Jackson, while others suggested that the King of Pop has always been the standard.
“The issue with most of her fans is that they set such high standards for Bey that she hasn't simply met yet, and then compare her artistry & legacy to MJ’s… LMAO,” one X user alleged.
“I wanna like Beyonce so bad and be a fan but her stans annoy me so badly and disrespect Michael Jackson too much I have to be hater,” one user expressed.
“Michael Jackson has ALWAYS been the standard… She hasn’t met the standards that Michael has set,” another MJ fan wrote.
On the other hand, Beyhives strongly disagreed as they claimed that Queen Bey is literally the standard. Several Beyonce fans also alleged that she has achieved everything that matters, including the high standard.
“”They set such high standards for bey that she hasn't simply met yet" LMFAAAAAAAAAAAAAAO… BEYONCE is quite literally the STANDARD,” wrote one X user.
“There’s literally NO standard that the Beyhive has set for Beyonce. How can you even set a standard for someone that is already at the bar?...” another one fired.
“She has achieved everything that matters commercially, artistically & even in acclaim but with every decade there’s a new 'standard'eset in the industry….” said another one.
Beyonce vs Michael Jackson comparison has been raging for a long time
Recent social media debate has revived the discussion on whether or not Beyonce has attained the standard comparable to Michael Jackson. As per the same Billboard report, Jackson's popularity was unreal in the 1980s and 1990s. However, as the outlet stated, Beyoncé is an all-round performer who could be aptly compared to MJ.
On the other hand, according to the December 2024 Forbes report, Jackson earned the title of King of Pop in the 20th century, signifying his supremacy in dance and music. In contrast, the Cowboy Carter singer holds a comparable position in the streaming era.
Jackson's career was characterized by broad popularity that transcended national boundaries and demographics. In contrast, Beyoncé boldly used her art to draw attention to themes of race, gender, and power by drawing on her identity as a Black woman.
Additionally, with an estimated 500 million recordings sold globally, Jackson is one of the best-selling musicians ever, according to the American Songwriter magazine. As a solo artist, Beyoncé, on the other hand, has sold more than 174 million records in the US alone.
Furthermore, Michale Jackson holds the record for most Grammys won in one, with his eight wins in 1984. He remains the only solo artist to hold this record. On the other hand, the record for winning the most Grammy Awards in a lifetime is held by Beyoncé, with 32 wins.
However, Queen Bey has never addressed the debate regarding comparisons between her and Michael Jackson.
