Katy Perry's last album, Smile (2020), did not sit well with critics or listeners. She is set to return with her seventh studio album, 143, on September 20, 2024. Two singles from the album, Woman's World and Lifelines, have been released.
Katy Perry faced controversy after reuniting with Dr Luke to work on her upcoming album, 143
On July 10, Katy Perry announced details about her upcoming seventh studio album, 143. It is named after the pager code for "I love you" in the 90s. For her album, Perry reunited with many of her former producers, including Max Martin, Stargate, and Dr Luke.
The singer's reunion with Dr Luke faced widespread controversy and mixed reactions from fans due to the alleged abuse charges against the latter. Singer Kesha had been in a legal battle with Luke since 2014 after she accused the producer of drugging and raping her at a 2005 party.
Luke has denied all of Kesha's allegations and claimed that the popstar defamed him in 2014. The two parties resolved their battle off court in 2023 before it went to trial.
As per Billboard, Kesha and Luke's legal battle also allegedly involved Katy Perry. Kesha reportedly told Lady Gaga in chats that Luke also raped Perry, per Billboard. As per the court documents released in 2018, Kesha wrote to Gaga:
"I’m really upset with Katy Perry. She could bring the whole thing to a head but she won’t. She was raped by the same man."
However, the Teenage Dream singer denied such allegations. Billboard noted that Perry made it clear that she was never in an alleged sexual or romantic relationship with Dr Luke and never told anyone that the producer harassed or raped her. In a 2017 deposition before Kesha's alleged chats came to light, Perry said:
“I also knew both of them and a lot of people did not. So it was easy for them to be disattached and support an idea rather than an actual instance. Because when I say that I wasn’t raped, because I was not, that means that someone’s lying … And I want to stay out of it because I know them both and I empathize with both of them and obviously it’s a horrible situation for both of them."
Due to the serious alleged charges against Dr Luke, Katy Perry received massive backlash from certain users for reuniting with him for her upcoming album. After the singer announced her first single, Woman's World from 143, Kesha took to X and wrote "LOL," allegedly referring to Perry's reunion with Dr Luke.
Dr Luke and Katy Perry have previously worked together for many of the singer's successful tracks, including Teenage Dream, California Gurls, E.T., and Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).
