On August 19, 2024, Chappell Roan sat down with SNL's Bowen Yang for Interview Magazine, where the two talked about the pop star's sudden success with her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. During the interview, Roan proclaimed she has never been a keen fan of charting success, saying:
"I've never given a f**k about the charts or being on the radio, but it's so crazy how industry people are taking me more seriously than before. I'm like, 'I've been doing this the whole time, b**ch."
Her comment about charts resonated with many of her fans, who were quick to praise the 26-year-old singer, with one person tweeting:
"she's so real for that."
Many agreed with this sentiment, calling chart-worshipping "childish."
"So real. Worshipping the charts as talent has become a childish online game." One person tweeted.
""A chart is so fleeting. Everyone leaves the charts" tell em Chappell!!" Another person added.
"Amazing how much humility she can display while she's literally the best new artist," another user commented.
However, many thought she was throwing shade at other artists.
"Oooh the shade towards some artist's that love to mass release variants..." one person speculated.
"CHAPPELL GET BEHIND ME! PPL MAY THINK THIS IS SHADE!" Someone else added.
"why are valedictorians catching a stray???" Questioned another netizen.
Others were conflicted about the singer's statement, saying she owed her success to her album and songs climbing the Billboard charts.
"Well, she blew up now. How were people going to appreciate her art when they didn't know her? And how is she going to be appreciated by a lot of people without charting?" One person questioned.
"So... She would be cool making no money and going back to being a barista or...." another person asked.
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is at the second spot on Billboard 200, trailing behind Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department. Meanwhile, her single Good Luck, Babe currently occupies No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"My entire life has changed" — Chappell Roan about her recent success
While Chappell Roan's debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, was released in September 2023, the album gained traction during the past few months. In her interview with Bowen Yang, Roan described her life as having undergone a stark change over the last eight weeks, saying:
"I was just like, this is really weird and really hard. In the past, honestly, eight weeks, my entire life has changed. It's been really emotional because I'm not just singing pop music, it's automatically political because I'm gay."
Roan launched her career in the music industry in 2014 with her first original song, Die Young, under her real name, Kayleigh Rose. Since then, the singer has released many singles and EPs, releasing her debut album in 2023.
Chappell Roan's success culminated after she released Good Luck, Babe as a single in April 2024, earning over 7 million streams in a week. Since then, Chappell Roan performed at several prominent music festivals, including the Governors Ball, Lollapalooza, and Coachella.
During her interview, Chappell Roan also touched on sticking with her morals and values despite her resounding success, adding they helped cement her career.
"My career has worked because I've done it my way, and I've not compromised morals and time. I have not succumbed to the pressure. Like, "B**ch! I'm not doing a brand deal if it doesn't feel right. I don't care how much you're paying me." That's why I can sleep at night," she said.
Chappell Roan will perform the European leg of 'The Midwest Princess Tour,' with the next show scheduled in Berlin on August 31, 2024.
